Wolves & Jackals
Three questions:
(1) Who are these dudes?
(2) On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest rating, how would you rate W&J' music?
(3) Am I the only one that loathes the "blackened thrash" subgenre term?

Tommy covered 1 and 2, but I think blackened thrash is the best way to describe many bands.
My personal pet peeve is "metal punk," but it also works to describe some stuff. I just feel stupid saying it.
Back on topic, I wanted to like W&J more than I did when I caught them live last weekend. Just seemed like the band members' skill levels didn't mesh. Still, at a "6" I'd catch them again and would expect them to get better and gel more with time.

The singer/rhythm guitar player had some passion -- I'll give them that.
I once had the chance to chat briefly with Chris Spencer when the Cutthroats 9 played the Earl. I apologized for Atlanta having such a low turnout and he said, "ah, that doesn't matter. this is what I do. It's the kind of thing that my mom doesn't understand."

I'd say a 6 is a fair estimate. I liked the thrashier parts of their songs but they lean a bit in the metalcore/breakdown direction which i don't care for at all. I don't really think the vocals work with the style they're playing, though i don't remember it bothering me as much live as it does on their recordings... they also didn't have a bass player when i saw them which is a big no-no for me unless you're playing grind or powerviolence.
I'd say they have more national potential with their breakdown tendencies and non screeching vocals than a typical "black thrash" band but i feel unless they garner some sort of label support they won't go far as an underground band because of their shortcomings within the genre.

I feel the same about the vocals, they just don't fit well. When they play live it doesnt contrast as much but on recording it's pretty horrid. Other than that, some of their riffs were very entrancing, pretty original.Ryan wrote:I don't really think the vocals work with the style they're playing, though i don't remember it bothering me as much live as it does on their recordings...
