Just finished watching Jesus Camp. Man those kids are gonna grow up fucked up.
I didn't like the free advertising for the now defunct Air America radio though. It was already a one-sided film; they didn't need to slap in a ultra liberal talk show host to spell out the whole point of the movie. It hits you over the head from the first frame: Religious fundamentalism is bad. We get it. Why bother spiking the punch with liberal rhetoric? The religious wackos spoke for themselves. I hate that the liberals seem to have hijacked the atheism/agnosticism movement. There are some non-liberal atheists out there, too. Not many of us, I suppose, but we're out there.

Good choice of movie man. I think the most fucked part is when she actually says something along the lines of, If the radical Muslims can brainwash their kids why can't we? (not the exact words obviously) I really appreciated how the movie let's you come up with your own conclusion instead of being all CHRISTIANS ARE BAD MMMMK?

When vying for votes, conservatives have to appease religious voters. Lefties have a bit more room to work without alienating their base.Moloc wrote: I hate that the liberals seem to have hijacked the atheism/agnosticism movement.
While I fall solidly to the far left side of things, I'm happy for any Christopher Hitchens to come along and spread the message of reason and science.
Seems that there are so few out atheists that it's silly for us to have a go at each other over politics. I appreciate conservatives for protecting gun rights, I'd think y'all on the other side would appreciate the liberals (of which I am not one) for standing up for atheism.

I do appreciate the liberals standing up for atheism, yes. What I don't like is that they only seem to focus on the evils of Christianity, whereas Islam is left alone or mentioned as a side note, "Oh yeah, Islam is bad too I guess." That's the vibe I get from the atheist podcasts I listen to. Seems to me Islam is far more fucked up than Christianity and deserves more criticism. After all, you don't see many Christian suicide bombers. You might site Timothy McVey, but he was more of a Nazi terrorist than a Christian one. And he was too chicken shit to go out with the bomb.
I would love to see a Islam Camp type movie made that sheds just as much light on the evils of Islam as Jesus Camp did for Christianity, but I doubt we'll see that film released anytime soon.
Christopher Hitchens is great, yeah.
Sam Harris is wonderful, too. He just came out with The Moral Landscape, which I haven't read yet, but I gather he puts forth how we don't need gods to be moral creatures--that our evolved (for some of us) common sense is enough to prove humans are moral. If you haven't read The End of Faith yet, I highly recommend it.

There are things that the liberal left stand for that i agree with but the fact that they put off this vibe that it's my responsibility to make sure everyone is taken care of is horseshit.badcarburetor wrote:I appreciate conservatives for protecting gun rights, I'd think y'all on the other side would appreciate the liberals (of which I am not one) for standing up for atheism.
Maybe it's not cool or punk but i don't think less fortunate people are entitled to the wealth that successful people have earned. If you want money than earn it, don't expect it to be given to you. This whole thing about how rich people should have to pay more taxes is bogus.

Islam - and other religions - has far less effect on my day to day living than Xtianity. Just as I could give a shit about tribal life in Africa, Christians are the ones trying to legally dictate the way I live my life so they are deserving of the brunt of my frustration.
I have zero love for Islam. It's a regressive way of life that limits the potential of everyone who lives under it and especially that of women, homos, minorities, etc...however, it doesn't impact my life so why should I focus much energy on it? If you want to bring up the argument of radical Islamic terrorism, that's nothing more than a blip on my radar, a tiny blip. Christians surround me daily with their anti-abortion laws, their blue laws, their regressive mindsets that say their god picks one team over another and their belief that I'm a lesser person because I'm not superstitious.
As an aside, I'm a heavily tattooed children's librarian who works in an affluent multicultural community. I deal with the women in the beekeeper suits and their old men everyday. I never have issues with them. They are polite and respectful. If I went to live in their part of the world I'd expect to be unwelcome because my way of life would be seen as disrespectful of their's. That's just fine with me and, honestly, I think that's how it should be; wherever one lives it is their duty to assimilate.
A progressive tax system supports a strong infrastructure. The wealthiest Americans inherited their wealth rather than working even 40 hour weeks for it. The poorest Americans work their asses off and get jackshit from the shitbag corporations that employee them - and from where the wealthiest pull their laborless dividends. The argument that the lazy poor are stealing from the pockets of the hardworking middle class is bogus. Progressive taxation allows concentrated wealth to be redistributed from those who don't work to those who do. It's a matter of wealthfare costing Americans far, far more than welfare.
So now go ahead and call me a commie camel fucker lazy piece of shit who sucks off the government teet or just quote that great American Billy Milano. That's how to argue on the internet, right?

Sure plenty of the super ultra rich inherited their money but they inherited it from someone, at some point, who worked hard to get it and the fact that they are reaping the benefits without having to work hard for it doesn't bother me because someone before them busted their ass and were able to create/do something that made them so much money that it allowed their families, for generations to come, a higher quality of life.badcarburetor wrote:A progressive tax system supports a strong infrastructure. My Dad was dirt poor as a kid, put himself through college, and has worked his ass off his entire life to where now he makes a lot of money. Should he be taxed more because he had the work ethic and drive to be successful? I don't think so. Why should the money he works hard for be redistributed to people who didn't earn it?
The world isn't fair, some people have it easy, some people have it tough, but everyone, barring disability, has the opportunity to make more for themselves. It's not anyone's fault but their own if they don't take that opportunity and it shouldn't be anyone's responsibility to make up for other people's decisions.

This is why I think it's total bullshit when people are all "You didn't grow up poor so you don't know" "You're not from the hood so you don't know" So what if someone grew up privileged? Does that mean that they're not entitled to an educated opinion? I know people that automatically assume that anyone that is successful didn't earn it by saying "I wish my mommy would pay for my education." Maybe if you applied yourself in school instead of hanging out with your pals you would have a scholarship.Ryan wrote: The world isn't fair, some people have it easy, some people have it tough, but everyone, barring disability, has the opportunity to make more for themselves. Blaming your problems on people that are more fortunate that you is pathetic. If you live your life with the sorry attitude and a philosophy that says nothing will ever get better for me of course that's how life is going to be.
If people can't handle that maybe they shouldn't live in a Laissez-faire society where it is every man for himself or you know be a homeless anarchist. This is 'merica no one is stopping you.

The only people I feel sorry for are the kids who grow up in such squalor. Too many poor people having kids they can't afford and the rest of society has to pay for it.
Part of me is glad we have a welfare state that we can bribe the lazy and the thugs into NOT committing crimes. There's a sizable portion of the population that just doesn't want to work and they're perfectly comfortable living on welfare. How many of them would start robbing and killing if they didn't get their government checks?
But I wish there was a way to take those children and put them in loving, caring, hard working families so they don't end up like their parents sponging off the system. But apparently having kids is a God-given right in this country and it doesn't matter if you have to use food stamps (or steal shit or sell drugs) to buy their Pop Tarts.
I'm almost starting to regret starting this conversation because i used to be a bed-wetting liberal hardcore until just a few short years ago. I hate politics anymore. I don't like being associated with the Glen Becks of the world, but people like Arrianna Huffington piss me off to no end.
I protested the first and second Gulf Wars and carried signs that said "Dethrone King George" and "No Blood for Oil." And most of the people I met were so far left they had shed any sense of individuality altogether. The "PEOPLE" were more important than the individual and that's what started to rub me the wrong way. I even met some Communists who wanted to "burn, baby, burn" the whole society down, redistribute all the private property and turn it all into public property. They didn't have a plan for this to happen except for starting The Revolution. Burn everything down--and then what? From each of his ability; to each of his need? Who's going to orchestrate this utopia?
I'm getting on a fucking rant, so I'll stop now. I'm mostly disillusioned with both parties and have little faith in mankind in general not destroying itself at one point in the not too distant future.
I just reread what I wrote and am wondering if it makes any sense. Fuck it. I'm just worried for my kids' future.

I forgot what it was called, but I know for sure that there is at least one film that portrays Islam in a terrible light. Actually, I just found one called "Islam Rising," which is not the one that I was thinking of, and I think it is a Christian propaganda film. I am a bit surprised by your statements though, don't you know how many people hate Islam?Moloc wrote:I would love to see a Islam Camp type movie made that sheds just as much light on the evils of Islam as Jesus Camp did for Christianity, but I doubt we'll see that film released anytime soon.
I agree with badcarburetor, Christianity has more of an impact on my everyday life. Also, I can't agree that many Muslims do not have something to be angry about...many of their countries being occupied or being used as pawns in various scuffles. The Taliban is basically a result of western imperialistic practices that had gone on from the early 1800s to 1989.

I am not too familiar with this...isn't it that you are taxes based on your purchases? I could see rich people being taxed heavily if they buy a lot of expensive shit, but it also seems like some rich people just hoard money instead of putting it back into the economy. Also, isn't it also true that poor people also have to make big purchases sometimes and this will hurt them a lot more than rich people? Poor people need cars and might want to buy a house one day, and wouldn't think make it way more of a struggle for them?badcarburetor wrote:A progressive tax system supports a strong infrastructure. Anyway, back to the thread topic...I watched House the other day and it was the shit. It's this Japanese horror movie from '77 that was aimed at a teenage female audience and the effects were awesome and it was visually impressive
