How does it make no sense? We're partying for the death of one mass murderer right now.Brian wrote:Nobody else parties for the serial killers or aborted fetuses, either. That comparison makes zero sense.BlackRoija wrote: I don't party every time a serial killer is given a lethal injection or when a fetus is aborted. I think these things should be done in certain cases, but I don't celebrate that they have to. Ideally we wouldn't have to do it at all. When we can effectively end conflicts without bloodshed (something we can't even do WITH it) then I'll celebrate.
You make it sound like every alcohol-poisoned frat bro (how many did you see at Tech this past Monday, by the way?) is celebrating the sheer force of violence. Is it not possible that people are celebrating because it's one symbolic step closer to peace (at least for the US)? I think it's much more likely and reasonable that people are celebrating that someone who has affected their lives in a very negative way, whether directly or indirectly, is gone.
Is it wrong for people to celebrate when their country wins a war too?
I'm not saying that, and I don't think it's really sensible to think that killing someone is a step closer to peace. Symbolically, yes, but I just think a paradigm shift is in order. The use of violent tactics should never be celebrated is all I'm suggesting. I'm not the first one to feel this way, and our society actually appears to hold those prolific ones who have in the past to a very high regard. I'm not saying it's wrong to be happy that the guy's gone, I just think that people take these things a little too far. You're making a bigger point about drunk college kids than you should, btw: I'll dislike that group regardless of the current context. But this is a broad comment on people in general.
I think celebrating a country winning a war (if by "winning" you mean our country having a smaller body count than the other by the time one throws the white flag) is a bit different because it's a bigger picture thing. The end of a war is the end of armed conflict and people (I'd like to think, anyway) are usually celebrating so that their loved ones can come home and the world can be a safer place. This situation is different in that we are celebrating a revenge which in no way guarantees the end of this conflict (if it doesn't even have the opposite effect). We aren't celebrating the end of the conflict, we're celebrating because we killed a guy. Hoo-rah.
Most wars shouldn't have happened in the first place. War is sometimes necessary, but I feel that sometimes it accomplishes little in comparison to its cost. It's not failed method in the same way that cutting a dog's vocal cords isn't a failed way to keep it from barking when people come over.Brian wrote:And really, we can't cease conflicts even with bloodshed? Have you ever heard of the Civil War? The American Revolution? Almost every war in the history of the world? Just because our actions over the past decade haven't had the best outcomes does not mean it's historically a failed method.
Honestly I never even understood from that movie what the tyranny of the Wicked Witch of the West/East consisted of other than having a weird obsession with a piece of shoes. From what I could tell, the munchkins were living in a good neighborhood free of the witch's soldiers blazing a path of fire through it and in a pretty nice part of the country. And it's a movie made by people in a society that feels that killing someone is certainly easier way of effectively ending their negative effects on society. But maybe I'm taking your comment a little too seriously. I wouldn't call the munchkins assholes, I'd just say hey guys, maybe we could be a little more somber.Brian wrote:The Munchkins in the Wizard of Oz...what a bunch of assholes. "Ding, dong, the witch is dead!!" How can they bear to live with themselves? Short little bastards.
I'm not going to bother responding to the others because I'm not going to stoop to acknowledging neanderthalic name-calling that's frankly uncalled for. I wouldn't expect a rational debate from the local "metalhead" crew but I wouldn't make the assumption that I couldn't try, either. Someday in the real world you'll have to deal with people who have different views and beliefs than your own, and it's never too late to grow up. Really, if it "pisses you off" just for me to say the things I have, then I'd rather be a college liberal panty waste than someone of your mindset any day of the week. Although I do have to mention that I identify more with your Milton Friedmans of the world than anyone of the contemporary "liberal" tag. Not that this is important.

It just pisses me off when people get all sensitive about Islamic countries. They are completely intolerant. Try going to college or hosting a radio show or drinking a beer or listeing to metal there. You couldn't do any of that AS a muslum, so if anyone wants to be all defenseive I say this: go live there as a white man and see how your treated.

I know several people who live in Syria, Pakistan, and Israel (who listen to metal, by the way; it's a bit difficult to get the CDs over there, though) and you're making a pretty sweeping judgement of an entire class of people you so obviously no nothing about. I'd imagine the average Iranian is probably far more tolerant than you based on this post, and based on (respectable) journalistic depiction of everyday life in those countries, they most certainly are. Where do you draw the conclusion that they are all completely intolerant? From their governments? Their dictatorial governments which in recent months have been overthrown by protesting citizens one by one? You've never been to a single one of those countries. It's the law that you can't drink a beer there, but then again you can't smoke weed here. Look at how we treat our Muslims, subjecting them to humiliating congressional hearings to decide whether or not to treat them all like terrorists or something and our (white overpriveleged) citizens in some of our more lovely states are trying to get them out of our schools. Is that any better than how they treat white men? (how DO they treat white men, by the way? how are they received in Syria as compared to Egypt or Jordan? can you enlighten me?) Plenty of their people DO go to college and probably rival many of our Murrican boys in academic abilities and their contributions to society. Not every Middle-Eastern (a broad category encompassing several ethnic groups, religions, and nationalities) is an al-Qaeda agent or Muslim extremist (a small minority in those parts, mind you) just like every American isn't a ten-gallon-hat wearing, Marlboro smoking, trigger-happy cowboy with a tattoo of the crucified savior on his dick.Azrael wrote:It just pisses me off when people get all sensitive about Islamic countries. If you're talking out your ass from kindled American white-man's anger, best to stop before you make more a fool out of yourself.

Fear the brown-skins. They're coming for our innocent white virgin daughters.
The funniest part about this with the "go back home" chanting is that some of these people they're yelling at probably live next door to them
Not a direct response to anything mentioned in this thread, just kind of something to think about when saying anything about intolerance.

It pisses me off when people start hating on followers of a faith or a group of people all because of a minority. Try being black in a country where your ancestors were forced to live.. If you still don't know what I mean then try living in Europe as an African or even an American (in some places) and see how you're treated. Asia seems to be pretty intolerant over all. Europe isn't that far behind them. It seems most Americans forget that racial equality is still a new thing in the west.

or maybe it's just me getting old and dumb, I've made so many unconscious there/their and two/too/to mistakes recently and too many for it to even be just silly. and next semester's when I'm gonna have to start writing a lot more. RIP
arguing with people on the internet over matters of opinion doesn't usually do much to piss me off. if it did I think I'd have bigger things to worry about.Azrael wrote:Alright, in hind sight, I tally this up to a differance of opinion. Corey, your a good dude, and we have a lot in common, I don't wanna piss you off.
