This.
Yes for sure!
Ya know, I think this can also extend towards other forms of music as well. Like for instance, when my dad was a teenager in the 70s, he loved stuff like The Tubes, The rolling Stones, and Iggy Pop. He's now in his 50s and he still LOVES all of it. It'll never go away! He hated disco, and he still hates it. Also, he still parties as if he's still 18 LOL
yeah, I started listening to more extreme forms of metal when I was 16 and I could see myself jamming to Cannibal Corpse when I'm 60

That is a cool thought. I would love to see an old man bust out an air guitar solo with a shuffleboard pole while listening to Accept.

hells yeah! That would indeed be awesome
I guess I can't quite say that metal reminds me of my youth but I'm not a teen anymore and yeah, those were some crazy years though! But I'm still doing crazy shit so it's gonna be awhile before I start winding down! (well, I'm not doing drugs lol I'm just having a good time!)

I don't know about other people, but the sound and look of it embodied a sort of honesty I couldn't find anywhere else at the time. Other bands in the same genre and others appeared to be "just making music," while a band like Iron Maiden (Di'Anno then...) looked and sounded as if they had NO CHOICE but to do that. It was id release. Whereas I went and drank a six of shit malt lik and smoked weed and shot off firecrackers, those guys got together, plugged in, and WENT OFF. I understood that. I understood songs like "Running Free" and "Killers" and "Wrathchild." I felt that shit. Still do.

Exactly. "Honesty is my only excuse."

This. I don't feel like I have a choice in the matter.
Also dead on. I wandered away from metal for awhile, but it came back with a vengeance and I can't really explain it.
For instance, I am really bummed that I most likely will miss a show by a bunch of Swedes half of my age, playing in a basement. It's not like going to
that show is going to earn me any cool points with any people I interact with in real life. Hell, most of them think that I am ... quirky, I guess. I really have no explanation why I'm bummed about it. Other than shit is going to rock and I'm going to miss out.

Metal crawls under your skin, like a parasite. It sinks its talons deep into your neurons and bites down on your brain stem. Your only option is to accept your fate and welcome the beast. You're possessed by a musical tyrant of the soul that sucks your very essence into its lungs and breathes you back out as carbon monoxide. All the while you gnash your teeth and willfully bend to its clutch, its stench, its mind-scraping antagonism. You seethe with a virus-like ache quenched only by the creature's sonic torment. It leaves you battered, bloodied and begging for more aural orgasmic fury.
Then you have a beer.

Agreed. Shit just looked cool. Growing up during the very preppy 80s that meant a lot. I wasn't one of those people and wanted to alientate myself from them in everyway possible. I'm still like that.

Yeah I feel you on the alienating thing. I was always into destructive/domination things and war stories when I was little (maybe it's a guy thing). When I started to become a pre-teen I got into more worldly things such as world history, religion, geography, etc etc etc. So when I saw these metal album covers, artwork and people jamming out that's pretty much was sealed the deal.

Those were your words, man.
I commend anyone who actually does honest work for a living instead of sponging off the government. I stay home and wrangle kids all day. Wish I got paid for that. The bookstore is where I spend my downtime. I don't look at it as a job so much. It's too much fun.

It's just something to get me by until I want something better for myself. It's going to get old after a while. I don't mind having a shitty job due to having too much fun.

In these uncertain times it is good to remember the words of a certain Judge Smails, "The world needs ditch diggers, too, Danny."

The imagery was the first thing to attract me to this music as well. I remember being at the mall record store and staring at cassettes like Bonded by Blood. I was entranced but I think I was kind of scared as well because of my christian upbringing. It would be several years before I purchased any of those scary cassettes.
What I heard on those first purchases would change my world forever.

I remember going into the Peachtree Battle Turtles with the intention of buying the then new Stones album, Undercover. But up on the display wall was Shout at the Devil. That was about the coolest looking album cover ever with the textured pentagram and the gatefold sleeve. I was already into metal, but that was my first time seeing that record. Bought it immediately and followed up with the Stones first meh album (Emotional Rescue is debatable, but I generally back it) at a later date.

I'm not explicitly trying to expose my kids to metal, but if it's on I don't turn it off. I just hope some of my tastes rub off on them. I fear what will be popular ten years from now and that they'll be into some lame commercial shit. I want to instill in them a belief that just because something is popular you don't have to like it. it's OK to be different and listen to your own music. My 4-year-old has heard Skeletonwitch and said he liked it. And my 2-year-old dances to KMFDM.
But whatever they get into, I will respect it as long as they like it on its own merit and not because all their friends are into it. I don't want to be one of those parents that just knocks their kids' music like my father did. Twenty years from now i don't want to be saying something like, "What's that garbage you're listening to? You wanna hear real music? Bathory and Venom, now that's music for ya!"
