Sabotage is the best Sabbath album. Iommi's riffs are masterful.Odinson666 wrote:sabotage is the most under rated sabbath album
What would you do for a new Morbid Angel album?

I totally agree about Sabotage, but I know several people who name Technical Ecstasy as their top Sab album. Born Again is really underrated, too.
Cheap Trick may not put out quality albums anymore, but they still bring it live. I'd much rather seem them rock the lid off a chili cook-off than hear lame album after lame album, though it is understandable why they want to occasionally record something new.

Sabotage is the best Ozzy Sabbath rec easy. But like Ryan sez, it has everything to do with the riffs (and not Ozzy).
My faves are Mob Rules, H&H, and Born Again. Born Again especially is criminally underrated.

I'm gonna have to totally disagree with you here. There is no way you can just say Sabotage is easily the best Ozzy Sabbath album. Each one is great in their own ways. I don't think I could say any of the first 6 Sabbath albums are better or worse than any other. Self titled, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Vol 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are in no way inferior to Sabotage.stewvee wrote:Sabotage is the best Ozzy Sabbath rec easy. And as undeniably awesome as the riffs are, Ozzy is huge as to why those songs rule so hard. Symptom of the Universe has incredible riffs, but it wouldn't be half the song it is without Ozzy's completely wailing hauling vocals. Same with Megalomania, shit that song sounds like it was written just for the vocals. Same thing with The Writ.
Point is that the first 6 Sabbath albums are fucking incredible, almost flawless and Ozzy is a HUGE part of why those songs are so amazing.
I can agree with that to some degree Pat, but imo Sabotage is the best of the Ozzy era for exactly the reasons you stated... it was essentially the perfect marriage of Ozzy's vocals with the songwriting of Iommi, Butler, and Ward.

I'm a Dio Sabbath guy. Not much into Ozzy Sabbath. His first two solo records I'd take over anything in the Sabbath discog.

This guy also likes Rush -- take his opinion with a grain of salt.stewvee wrote:I'm a Dio Sabbath guy. Not much into Ozzy Sabbath. His first two solo records I'd take over anything in the Sabbath discog.
Pat is right: the first six are all fan-fucking-tastic. But I'd have to go with Paranoid or Master of Reality if we're talking about stranded-on-a-desert-island scenario. There's no question that "Hole in the Sky" and "Megalomania" and "Symptom of the Universe" are great songs. It has been a long time since I heard that album, though, and I don't remember the rest of the tracks, except for "Am I Going Insane (Radio)".
"Into the Void"? "Lord of this World"? "Children of the Grave"? "Sweet Leaf"? Those are some really great songs...
May By-Tor tear you to shreds.

All a huge snoozefest compared to Mob Rules' title-track. Or "Bring On the Night" or "Trashed" from BA.Knucklehead wrote:"Into the Void"? "Lord of this World"? "Children of the Grave"? "Sweet Leaf"? Those are some really great songs...
Soundgarden, who embellished the template LotW and CotG established, are so much more interesting and fun to listen to.

Really? Doesn't "The Mob Rules" have a vaguely Zeppelinish feel to it, especially in the guitar line in the chorus? I'm not that familiar with the Dio-era catalog, but what I've heard hasn't driven me crazy. Except for maybe "Chidlren of the Sea." In any event, those songs never really spoke to me. So you're obviously wrong.stewvee wrote:All a huge snoozefest compared to Mob Rules' title-track. Or "Bring On the Night" or "Trashed" from BA.Knucklehead wrote:"Into the Void"? "Lord of this World"? As an aside, which did you hear first? Both Heaven and Hell and [ i]Mob Rules[/i] were released around the time that I was becoming aware of heavier music, but I heard all the classic Ozzy stuff first.
Interesting observation about Soundgarden. To my ear, though, they fused, and then embellished on, both Ozzy-era Sabbath and Zeppelin.

I'm an Ozzy Sabbath guy, but I can dig Dio's stuff too. Just recently started listening to the Martin-era albums after ignoring them for years. Quality jams.
Hey bros, aint about being wrong or right, I just think what Iommi accomplished with the heavier tunes reached its apex through other players, namely Kim Thayil.
There's totally a sorta "Pagean" phrasing to "Mob Rules;" it's almost like a slowed down "Celebration Day." Big Page fan so that's a double win for me.
I heard the Dio era stuff first from the hesh at high school and my cousin and then worked back through the Ozzy stuff. Sure, I mean, it's great fucking Heavy Metal. But it doesn't work for me like the music they spawned: Pentagram, St Vitus, etc.
