As my favorite album of the last five years, An Overdose of Death was going to be nearly impossible to top. Did Joel Grind manage that on his Relapse debut Conjure and Command? For me, no, he didn’t, but that’s no insult to opus that is Conjure.
I’ve now spun Conjure and Command through twice while giving it dedicated attention. There’s nothing wrong with Conjure. In fact, I dig it very much. The sound and atmosphere of the album is impeccable. Every instrument rings through and it has that dense, crushing quality that’s true to most great metal. However, from a songwriting standpoint it doesn’t have the immediate impact of Joel Grind’s earlier stuff – especially on An Overdose of Death, which for me was a perfect album start to finish.
Conjure is a brilliant album full of solid musicianship and dark musicianship that will grow on me more with time - of that I have no doubt - but it’s that denseness that over shadows what Joel does best and that’s writing punk fueled, catchy as fuck mosh thrash anthems. I’m sure it’s fair to say that he wants to grow and expand as a songwriting and musician - and more power to him - but, for me those simple breakdowns, rock n’ roll infused leads and funny bits like random tambourine that fleshed out Overdose that are sorely missed. Conjure is no doubt a great album, but Overdose was full of great songs.
Growth is great, but simplicity has its place, too.
B+
Just my opinion…
Also -
Em Ruinas - ...From the Speed Metal Graves
Brilliant old school sounding Brazillian speed metal that's just what the album title implies. Very much looking forward to seeing them at Live Evil in October.
Otherwise -
Some Terror, Warzone, Oi Polloi, Steve Earle, Bathory, Death Breath, Cannibas Corpse and Darkthrone...

It is probably my favorite album by the Stones, followed by Sticky Fingers. For whatever reason, I've never been a big fan of Exile. I know that many consider it their highwater point, but it just hasn't clicked.badcarburetor wrote:Great call. Only rivalled by Exile. Goats Head Soup anyone? I feel like it gets overlooked quite a bit. By far my favorite Stones record. Let It Bleed is a close second.Knucklehead wrote:It is probably my favorite album by the Stones, followed by Sticky Fingers. For whatever reason, I've never been a big fan of Exile. Sticky Fingers, too…That whole era is brilliant. Even Get Your Ya-Yas Out is great. Up until Undercover the Stones really couldn’t do any wrong – I’ll even back Emotional Rescue, as unpopular of a call as that may be. GHS is a fantastic (Starfucker is just about my favorite song in the world), but, for me, much trippier album. My favorite is generally Some Girls just because I love how simple and almost punk rock it comes off. Really, there are few bands that can rival the Stones for the density and diversity of their catalog.
