My take.
Missed the first couple of bands, arriving around 8:00.
A Sound of Thunder has a great freakin' singer. She has an immensely powerful voice and they had some good riffs. The style, though, is not really my thing.
Brazen Angel turned me off with their Southern Nationalism. I am a Yankee. Plus, their style is not my thing.
Mnemosyne is not really my thing. Their guitarist is obviously very talented and they had sort of DRI/Suicidal groove going at times. They had some really good riffs, but then they would wander off into territory that didn't really seem to gel with the thrash riffs.
Raven. Kicked. Ass. For guys that have been making metal since 1974, they had just a ton of energy. Mark Gallagher is still insane, even after all of these years. There were tons of solos and stuff, but I think that is part of the territory, given that they play straight-up, old school heavy metal. I would hope that I have as much energy as Mark Gallagher does when I am his age.
Although it has mellowed, because he is no longer 21, John Gallagher's voice is still strong and he still has his range. Frankly, I was surprised.
You can't argue with "Take Control", "All for One", "Mind of Metal" and "Break the Chain". Those are pure fucking classics. I only wish that they would have played "Hung, Drawn and Quartered", but whatever. They also played "Rock Until You Drop", "Live at the Inferno", and "Faster than the Speed of Light." There were several other songs that I didn't recognize. And a medley with "Symptom of the Universe", "Genocide", "Wont' Get Fooled Again", "Summertime Blues" and a few others. Also, random quotes during solos. "Breadfan"? What?
Anyway, I've always sort of lumped Raven and Anvil into the same category, for no real good reason. I don't know quite how to put it, but Anvil seem to have a more pronounced entertainment slant to their show. Raven, on the other hand, just got up there and rocked.
Quote of the night: Brian, on seeing John Gallagher come on stage to sing with A Sound of Thunder -- "I've never seen anyone sing metal while wearing a fanny pack."
