bands who had more than one later-uncharacteristic juvenilia record

Post by melkor » Sun December 20th, 2020, 3:40 pm

i.e. the debut record and at least one directly succeeding record do not form part of the "popular" corpus. and they had to be released under the same name. and I don't simply mean a stylistic change, but, on top of that, records which were completely unrecognized, and continue to be so to a significant degree whether or not you might agree with the lack of recognition.

like:

pantera: mental magic, projectz in da jungle, etc.
manilla road: invasion, metal

but NOT stuff like at the gates or in flames, because their earlier material is recognized by a significant faction to be superior.

Hmm. More than one and consecutive and not particularly beloved by a significant number of fans? Tough one. The first two Lääz Rockit records come to mind. And any Ministry prior to Psalm 69. Not coming up with much.

Good call on those two, although I seeThe Land of Rape and Honey as one of those "transitional" records. You knew what was coming next.

The first two Mind Over Four efforts (Desperate Expression, especially) are pretty different from their later stuff.

LR is a good call. I'll take your word on ministry, too

I only really like With Sympathy, and love that record, but never heard the second Ministry and never got into or outright hate everything else I’ve heard. Worth checking out?

if you count EPs then inquisition would make the list, but I'm not sure if I count EPs.

If you balloon this out to popularity among normies--Judas Priest and Iron Maiden could both fit the criteria.

Therion and Ministry definitely fit the mould nice and snug.

I was gonna say priest would fit a one record criterion, but sad wings belongs to the "mainstream" portion. and maiden still plays a bunch of stuff from the first two live.

+1 to therion. thanks, b.

Twitch is worth a spin with even a little bit of love for With Sympathy. Way more electronic. Al's stories about discovering hardcore while simultaneously touring with bands like A Flock of Seagulls or Depeche Mode doesn't seem so far fetched after a listen or two.

And how could we have forgotten about Therion?!

If we're gonna bring up Priest and Maiden, I'll throw Ulver in for argument sake. Held off earlier because of the possible "significant factor" thing.

Disagree that the early, death-metal Therion offerings were "completely unrecognized," at least if we're talking about Lepaca Kliffoth. That generated somewhat of a buzz at the time (yeah, I remember).

Sentenced sorta had 3 phases yeah? I think the popular consensus would settle on the melodic middle stuff (and more than I would have ever assumed like the goth butt rock later stuff) rather than debut.

Where does Darkthrone sit in all this?

I'd agree with this, from the populous at large.

darkthrone at any period defies any kind of characterization so I wasn't even going to try to touch that
