shooting in my apt complex last night

I'm totally unsurprised at news of shootings or police activity near Shallowford...that's where we (me and Tim H.) used to live (NE Expwy access road) and after our next-door neighbor was bludgeoned to death and a guy across the street was knifed to death (both drug-related), we decided it was Time To Leave. That's when I bought the house in Auburn.

I've noticed our old apartment complex has since been completely razed.

I live in the new ones right behind the Publix on Shallowford and 85. Do you remember when Publix used to be some nasty mexican grocery store? I went in there once and never went back.

Yeah you should know, one side of Shallowford isn't too bad and as you go towards Briarcliff and into those neighborhoods, you'll see mcmansions and all that shit. On the other side of Shallowford as you go towards Chamblee isn't all that great and since I live pretty much right on this border, some of the nastiness leaks in every now and then.

Actually, there have been a few apartment complexes there that have been razed. We used to live on the northbound side of the freeway (same as you) in The Cliffs, which -- as these things go -- wasn't alll that bad, just quite old. (1950s constructed.)
There was a real shithole on the southbound side past Chateau Montaigne that was closed down by the county for several infractions, and of course the same is true of the old Dial Inn that used to be sitting where the Publix is now. ("You can Dial Inn, but you CAN'T dial out!")

Yep. And there was a Dekalb Police sub-station there too, at one point, and a tag office.

I'm surprised they haven't shut down that dump of a complex behind the Quality Inn and Apollon Auto Service. I was robbed there once while delivering pizzas for PizzatheHutt, and that was, like, fifteen years ago.


As an aside, I recommend Apollon Auto whole-heartedly. One of the only honest garages I've ever encountered. Just tell Tassos or George that "Paul with the black Escort" sent ya.

I was delivering for them when they first started delivery here in Atlanta....and very badly at that. 90-minute wait times for pizza were common. Lord, did they suck compared to Dominos, who I worked for right before that.

Quality Inn...that place just looks like a dump. never been there though. That apt complex you mentioned that's right behind it is swarming with illegal Mexicans now. There's always a shitton of them around there just standing there...probably looking for work.

Well....let's just say this was a looooong time ago. Y'know, back before metal was, umm, really metal.


One of the cool things about delivering pizza is that you basically get to sit down for most of the night and listen to tunes in your car. Considering how much money you can make (in a decent delivery area) in tips, it's not a bad way of making money.

I lived in The Avenues next door to The Cliffs three years ago when I first moved to Atlanta and heard plenty of horror stories about the Cliffs. I constantly fought giant rats and roaches, had junkie squatters living in the abbandoned units in my building, had my vehichle broken into, neighbors regularly passed out in the hallway at my door, etc. and was often told that we had it made in the shade compared to tennants at the Cliffs.

Yeah? Well WE heard that The Avenues were like a miniature Sarajevo, except that Sarajevo could occasionally count on UN humanitarian aid! So THERE!

Dunno about the rest of The Cliffs, but our part of it was a decent -- if old -- place when we moved in.
Then for a couple of years it was actually kinda cool because it was 'refugee-friendly' and we had a lot of East European refugee families who had been relocated there during the Troubles (hence my sly Sarajevo reference above)...well-to-do folk mostly. There were days when you could hear five languages in the space of 5 minutes down at the pool. Decent people.

They gradually moved out and more Hispanics moved in...and the complex gradually sank.

I think I must have discovered Metallica and Slayer in 1985. Ride the Lightning was out, but Master wasn't. And Slayer was scary.
