Cassette woes

Post by melkor » Fri June 19th, 2015, 5:08 pm

I just got the DD issue of Diocletian's WOAAA, and with one particular tape deck it sounds like utter shit. Tracking issues, weird phasing sound in the treble, basically like all around omnivore piss. Unlistenable as far as I'm concerned. But get this: tried it on the other deck (a unit of the same model) and it sounds perfect. What's the deal? All other cassettes I've tried sound exactly the same on both units, so I have no idea why this tape is different. So, guys who've lived through a greater proportion of the cassette era than I did: what's the deal? Do I need to clean the heads, realign, or what?

On a tangential issue I also got the cassette version of Impetuous Ritual's latest, and what a fuck-up that is. Unlike the other tape, the sound is fine, but the track order is all fucked. It's supposed to be full album on one side, then the full album in reverse on the other side. Well, it's not. It's all the tracks except the final 15 minute track on one side, then some weird reverse conglomeration of tracks on the other side followed by the true (non-reversed) final track to close it off. What a clusterfuck.

0/2 on cassettes this week.

As a resident old guy, I don't know what that is all about.

I used to use Q-Tips and rubbing alcohol. Most people thought that was a bad idea, because the cotton on the swab would unravel and get stuck in the tape deck.

Seems like I also had a cassette that would clean the heads.

But that was a long time ago.

Blow harder!!! and then dip the tip of a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol. Clean the metal tape head with the tip of the cotton swab, rubbing it both horizontally and vertically until it is satisfied.

way ahead of you! i've packed isopropyl, q-tips, the offending tape, and some breath spray in my bookbag.

Also spray a little graphite spray behind the little plastic gears that turn the tape. Do Not use anything like WD-40.

WTF is "European Pro Tape"?

It looks like it might be square. Can I play this on my American clock radio? :(
