I think people are bitter because Metallica "sold out" and had success doing it. Megadeth, Slayer, and whoever else fell flat on their faces, as you said, so there's no animosity even though they "betrayed" their original sound, it was a failure. Metallica gets hated because they made tons of money "betraying" their origins.BlazeTSU wrote:and another thing.........
everyone hates on metallica and says that they are the biggest sell-outs in metal history BUT is that really true? is that just based on the fact that they were successful? a lot of the older bands put out at least one "what they hell?" album. does anyone remember Kreator's run through the 90's? Megadeth's "Cryptic Writings"(megadeths "black album attempt) "Risk"(megadeths load attempt)? the last three Slayer albums? Sepultura and Soulfly anyone?
i think its most impressive that Metallica became one of the biggest bands on the planet doing what they wanted to but so many bands tried to follow trends and fell flat on their faces.

Heres the new single "The Day That NeverComes"

Put a big ol' smile on my face!
FINALLY, a new song from Metallica that resembles METAL!
Are those some sweep picks and double bass I hear at the end?!?!?
Perhaps a reason to forgive them?
I think if the rest sounds like this I might give them another chance to be my favorite band again!
And for all the persistent haters, theres a band I discovered before St. Anger came out that was being labeled on the P2P networks as "new metallica" and I prayed that the songs were real. However I found out it was actually a band from Finland called Am I Blood. This is probably what Metallica should have sounded like after the black album, if not before.

My Apocalypse.
I'm assuming that you guys have already heard it. I'll give it a second listen, but, having heard the song about 15 minutes ago, I remember nothing about it, other than an impression that it was faster and sounded a bit like the AJFA era.

i think i liked "the day that never comes" more but this song isn't bad by any means......better than anything Slayer has done for a decade. and funny thing is that it reminds a lot of mid-nineties Slayer.
I wonder if they are going back to the old RTL, MOB, AJFA formula of arranging the album. Meaning.....
Song 1 - barnburner
Song 2 - Epic title track
Song 3 - slower, heavier
Song 4 - more ballad-esque
Songs 5 - 7 - ass kickers
Song 8 - usually being an instrumental
I know that they are putting something like 14 songs on this album so i doubt that they'll follow this formula exactly but I'm wondering if the songs will fall in line with albums past.
I ask b/c "my apocalyse" sounds like an opener or closer for them. "Cyanide" seems like a 5-7 type song(escape, harvester of sorrow....etc..) and "The Day That Never Comes" has the ballad-esque feel to it.

Ya. Like I said, I've only listened to it once, but I remember thinking, "what's up with the Slayer riff?"BlazeTSU wrote:I think i liked "the day that never comes" more but this song isn't bad by any means......better than anything Slayer has done for a decade. and funny thing is that it reminds a lot of mid-nineties Slayer.

I dont think this album will be good in any way shape or form. But I love them.
Give James a bottle of jack and tell him he has no money and do the same for Lars (and Dave Mustain) and they'll write a hard album again. No main stream band can be metal and be a good band. They dont need to "try and express their creativity" and just play classic thrash. But im not holding my breath.
This album is already a billion times better than St. Anger.
Actually I think they should break up.
Edit: I just listened to S&M and the intro rules. The Ecstasy of Gold is awesome, i wish they would have done the whole thing on the album.

well, 'mainstream' metal bands can be good...the thing is most metal bands are not played in the mainstream at least in this country. Think of all the other countries where metal is accepted in the mainstream and is played on the radio.TheKshatriya wrote:I dont think this album will be good in any way shape or form. In the US, you got your crappy MTV2 bands like Killswitch and Chimera and those could be considered mainstream here so what you say holds true but not necessarily for other countries.
other than that, I totally agree with what you say! (except them breaking up hehe)
