My roomates and I are addicted to a game called Puzzle Fighter, which is kinda like an update of Dr. Mario/Tetris with characters from Street Fighter II and Darkstalkers throwing different colored gems at each other.
It's hard to describe but holy shit is it addicting. We either play that or NBA Jam on the SNES with all manner of drinking game rules made up on the spot.

Re: Guitar Hero
heh, I wasn't quite THAT good at either Galaxian or Galaga. Or Xevious, either, but that one rules, too. (There's another plug'n'play game console with THAT one, that I'll be getting soonly.)NeuroNomicon wrote: Paul, Galaxian/Galaga are the SHIT! Of all the space-shooters ever, that is never ending fun. The best part is trying to kick the shit out of the highest score some turd-burglar got at Aladdin's Castle.
The games I could truly kick ass at were BattleZone and a rare sit-down game called Space Tactics. Gold Mine at Cumberland Mall had one of 'em; now I've got one in the garage (it isn't quite playable).
One or two quarters, and two hours or more per game. When you're a poor high-school or college kid, that's a great way to spend a lazy, cheap-ass afternoon.
Speaking of Gold Mines....
They kinda dried up when home video consoles and PC games came into their own. You can still find the occasional mini-arcade (in movie theaters, entertainment plexes, etc.) but the stand-alone arcades are all gone, AFAIK.Only mildly off-topic: What the hell ever happened to videogame arcades? Dave and Buster's and Jillian's do not count. Real, down-and-dirty, ski-ball havin', pin-ball blastin', Galaga-in-the-corner-havin', shady motherfuckers-workin', good, ole-fashioned, arcades? Where the shit did they go?
If I ever win the lottery, I want to buy up a whole bunch of old, classic games, refurbish them, and open a place called Arcade Game Hell..."where old video games go to die and be reborn again." I probably wouldn't charge per gameplay, just sell day-passes or something good for unlimited play.

Excellent idea
I KNOW you've played the old-school Gauntlet in four-player mode. Total fun. That arcade "hell" sounds more like heaven. The problem with Arcades tanking, is that now every videogame requires a degree from Tech, and a learning curve of 24 hours. The beauty of the coin-op was its simplicity: you go in, find something that looks cool, and commence to beat down on goblins for fun and adventure. They're pretty easy to pick up, fun to play, and almost always balls-out. It seems like every game, in order to be a success nowadays, has to play like Myst.
I think you're right - the home/PC market slaughtered the arcade. That being said, SEGA was always cutting-edge in those types of action-oriented, quick fun games, and they've been a great bit under the radar. It's a real shame, really.
Justin(our keyboard player) wants to open a theatre the screens only old classics like Rambo, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, the original Star Wars, etc, and have it as a dollar-theatre format.

Blaze, buddy, do NOT sell your X-box for a PS2. X-Box is a superior console in every way shape and form. Will is correct, Guitar Hero is a blast, but it is not worth the sacrifice of something as wicked as an X-Box. Plus, if you WERE inclined to trade that bad boy in, do it for a 360 or PS3. PS3 is looking absolutely evil, even if Spiderman helped them cook up their logo...

The Resident Evil series is quite righteous as well. The first one almost caused some penile leakage when that fuckin' doberman hell-hound busted through that window back in '95. Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine forever, baby.
"Blood? I...hope...this...is...not...Chris's...blood"
That, and lobbing a grenade in the Tyrant's chest and letting it simmer for a moment is more fun than a barrel of Bourbon.

Yeah but he'd have to offer up his X-Box and the title to his car to obtain a PS3.NeuroNomicon wrote:Blaze, buddy, do NOT sell your X-box for a PS2. Fuck Sony and their root-kit, proprietary bullshit asses.
Oh hello, what is in here?

Why, it's my Nintendo DS!

I play New Super Mario & Metroid the most.
& on the 360, I play Condemned: Criminal Intent.
I would have beaten it by now, but I lost it in the living room somehow.
Favourites of all time:
The original Metroid (which is pretty much what I have, they just tidied up the graphics and made maps in the Gameboy Advance version) & the original Castlevania.
& Blaze: fuck PS3.
Save up for an Xbox 360 & a Nintendo Wi.
I'll be a very sad wifey if there isn't a Wi under my tree come holiday time.

Re: Excellent idea
That was the one with the elf, the valkyrie, etc.? "Elf shot the food!" "Welcome, valkyrie!" "Players' shots do not hurt other players....yet." And my favorite....it would basically yell "I've not SEEN such bravery!" if one player was left fighting on all alone after other players had gotten vaped, to try to rope more people into putting coins in.NeuroNomicon wrote:I KNOW you've played the old-school Gauntlet in four-player mode. If you stuck to movies with a cult following or which REALLY benefit from the big-screen format (most SF and fantasy movies), that might work. Otherwise people would shrug and say "I've got that on DVD, why spend the gas?"Justin(our keyboard player) wants to open a theatre the screens only old classics like Rambo, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, the original Star Wars, etc, and have it as a dollar-theatre format.
I thought that was a birth control pill holder at first...holly wrote:Oh hello, what is in here?

Dan, it used to be impossible to find Puzzle Fighter but I think they re-released it recently or something. It used to go for like $100 on ebay but you can find it there real cheap now, less than $20 or so which is where we got our copy.
Prepare to eject on life for about a week after getting it though... you'll be hooked.
