I guess everyone is getting too old.

Look at the guy who seems to just pop up from the crowd onto the stage out of no where.

i think the decline in energy at metal shows probably has to do with the music itself. back in the day everybody was riff-heavy and had monster grooves but not anymore. if the music was still as energized as it was back then the shows would still be that wild. like when morbid angel played earlier this year. that was wild and crazy the whole time b/c they only played old material.

I agree 100% w/ Blaze. It's all about the music. I remember a lot of shows that looked like that clip and they were typically all thrash bands. Then there was Pantera - I hated them but their live shows were awesome because the music lent itself really well to an energetic environment.

I like the fact that was recorded by MTV.

And I agree with Blaze and Bob. It's kinda hard to physically move to something like grindcore, other than a seizure like movement. And most death metal now incorporates grindcore or is just too fast anyway.
i feel like all you can do now is just watch and be amazed at bands like Cryptopsy. Attempting to go nuts to that music will just make you look ridiculous.

yeah, and even in the mid nineties when metal was at its lowest in america you could still go see some fairly good bands and have crazy shows. bands like pantera, fear factory and machine head were all playing shows to crazed fans and the entire venues would be out of their minds.

Seems like being at shows in the early/mid 90's was a right place right time thing, I think it kinda went hand in hand with the whole grunge/hair metal backlash going on at the time. No one really plays that style of metal anymore that's a big enough act to draw that kind of crowd, plus security at shows is way tighter now thanks to the OMG TERRISTS, which makes it tougher to act like that at shows now. Now everyone either wants to go do retarded dancing at shows or just stand around and look tough and maybe nod their head a time or two.

I'd say the late 80s were the prime metal show years. People jumping off of balconies, huge speaker stacks, etc. The early/mid 90s brought death metal as the mainstream of metal and the beginning of the toned down shows. Obituary was always more groove oriented so they were a little different. Grunge may be credited with knocking metal from it's peak but death metal had a lot to do with the decline.

Maybe Neal's new thrash band can revive things.

fuck, i wish that thrash band could have worked out. kshatriya is playing again, just practicing for fun and stuff, but only new stuff that could definitely have crazy show too. more traditional death metal and thrash influences than the death grind/cryptopsy thing.

I find it physically difficult to headbang throughout a Krisiun or say Hate Eternal set, so i think the pace of the tunes has alot to do with it. For instance at Electric Wizard or Tualatin I find it physically difficult to move at all.

yeah I know that feeling. Whenever that happens, I'll just do windmills to no particular beat or just stand there.

...that, and the fact that all of us who used to take part in those crazy thrash pits are getting too fuckin' old. (Can't stage dive...my artificial hip can't take it!)

Headwalking is where it's at. I fluctuate between 160-170 and still headwalk as much as possible. I just can't compete with the meatheads in the pit.

Something else that may have contributed to lack of movement at metal shows is all the youngins getting sucked into the hardcore scene until they're too tired/cool to moosh.
