Is there a comprehensive listing of all bands?

Post by kfoll » Fri August 25th, 2006, 1:18 pm

I am trying to get together a list of all the bands from around here... either from Atlanta or the Northwest Georgia area and maybe even into Chattanooga since we have some who from there who regularly play here. I am not talking about Joe Blow's Garage Band practicing in their mama's basement and playing at the high school keg party. I'm referring to the bands who play real gigs in and around Atlanta, local bands, and it can also include signed bands who play elsewhere (i.e., Daath, and yes, I have their info already!).
If there is no list around, maybe some of you can help me by just posting the names of all the bands you know of and if you know their URL or email or Myspace page. If you don't, thats ok -- I can Google it or search Myspace. Feel free to post your own band too.
I should note that I'm not really interested in whether the bands are considered "good" or "bad" -- just in finding out what bands are out there. There will be a time and a place for qualifying and reviewing and stuff. My purpose in this is to find a way of contacting all these bands and finding out when they are playing shows so I can be sure to see each of them at least once in the next few months. And in case you need to know why I want to do that -- well, it's on my Myspace blog. :D
If you are still wondering where this is heading, I'll just tell you I'm in the process of putting together a website which will contain all the stuff I've been doing at the shows, i.e., photos and hopefully some of the DV footage I shoot(if I can get access to a better internet connection). There might then be reviews and so forth as well, not necessarily all by myself, because I plan to take any input from anyone who's interested in giving such. When the site is complete and working right, I'll post up a link here and a bulletin on Myspace.

This was a topic a while back where everyone named their favorite local bands... so that should be a good starting point.

Thanks, Greg, that is a great start. Now, to get these names into a database and then track 'em down...

LOL... thanks guys... well, I'm trying to determine what this "core" thing really is... maybe I'm just getting old or something but then again maybe there are just too many genres out there for me. :\ Maybe someone can explain that to an old-schooler like me. There never used to be so many different types of metal or even of rock... in my high school days it was either "Rock" or "R&B/Soul" or "Disco," not "core" this and "Gangsta rap" that. :P
Well, I'll work my way through all the ones I can find, and hopefully get out to see as many as I can. If I lived closer to Athens I'd go see some of those too.

Metal "Core", is not a real sub-genre of metal. It's for kids that listen to hardcore, but want to be "different". Kids being the operative word. Mostly hipster and scenester sissies.

You know a metal "core" band if they spend more time trying to look and sound tough, than to just fucking rock. They're likely to be covered in tattoos, and have some sort of Tony and Guy haircut, and the chicks look like dudes, and the dudes look like chicks. They use dissonant voicings in their guitars, have "breakdowns", which real musicians refer to as a "bridge", and generally try their best to look as tough as possible, despite weighing in a whopping 97 lbs wet.

Band names are likely to be along the lines of:

As I Lay Crying
A Thousand Open Wounds on my Shattered Soul
Barbwire Heart for your Valentine
Agayu
Between the Newfound Buried Your Blood
Everytime I Cry
Dies Witin Your Cuts
Rollicking Mellifluous Gallop of Pestilence in my Dreams
From Autumn With I am the Walrus

Essentially any band that says it is "metal" but for all intents and purposes sounds absolutely nothing like metal. Especially notable are when they go from gutteral death growls, to sounding like your kid sister after someone kicked her in the boob.
