We've got way too many awesome, AWESOME fucking bands from here and Athens for something like this NOT to go down. Hell, we'll probably even come out of hiding for something like this, lineup be damned.

The hardest part, I think, is getting a big enough venue to accomodate this, and to be sure it's not scheduled on a weekend that one of the bigassed metal fests are rolling through town...

nice flyer and title but i think we could handle this in 1 day, 2 days would influence too much garbage metal that is alrady polluting what we call "atlanta metal"

Matt, look at your PM's. ;)

My gut instinct says that if we found some off-the-wall venue such as a field somewhere or an old airplane hangar on an abandoned airstrip or some other such place and could get the local powers-that-be to approve such an event, we'd have a lot more freedom to put this on how we wanted to. I'm not all that down with the idea of using a place like Meehans either. As cool as that place was, it was extremely annoying to see bands walking in and out unloading equipment in front of other bands who were playing. I can only imagine what that'd be like for a day-long festival.

NeuroMike you remind me of Wayne, (did you have a Weird Naked Indian visit you in your sleep by any chance?) in that you have a visionary's sensibility. I would never want to dampen that because I'm that way myself. Sometimes the ideas come at me so fast I don't know what to do with them and i end up getting overwhelmed.

The thing to do right now is if we're really serious about doing this, we need to have a few people meet on a regular basis and talk and plan and brainstorm. I don't think it'd be very helpful to continue discussing this at any length on this board, except to get people to help maybe. I just never have seen any really good plans get worked out on an internet board where all the ideas get bounced around but no one can come to a consensus.

Thanks Kelly. I totally get wild hairs up my ass about stuff from time-to-time. My current wild hair is a signature-series bass I'm working on. It's going to be the fuckin' shit.

I agree about the often futile planmaking that occurs via the internet.

I am personally hoping that the WREKage crew and LFRGreg can help put this thing together, since they're the fucking nexus of all things Atlanta Metal. AxDx Will is well versed in Atlanta metal lore as well. Vyserith Harrison did a good job booking that Meehan's fest...

I don't know jack about booking shows.

The idea of a private landowner is good, but a lot of times they're against this sort of thing due to liability and custodial negligence issues. Thus making it somewhat of a slippery slope. I'd like to talk with whoever set up that HomePark thing FE played, as something like that but with better parking and on a grander scale would be the bomb-diggitty.

I can round up bands and promote like a motherfucker, but as far as organizing I won't be much good, especially since it's in Atlanta.
Fuck it, Dude, let's go bowling.

If you think any of the radio stations are going to be involved, it needs to be at a place that is actually a music venue with insurance for such events.

I'm in on all of this, and I'll be back in Atlanta in about three weeks, but we need to be realistic here.

Might I suggest Under the Couch? Georgia Tech students are still able to book there, it's big/small enough for people to come and go throughout the day, and we would probably be able to rent a projector and/or a screen from the GT library if we're serious about the movie viewing idea.

The only problem, as there always was at UTC, will be parking & air conditioning.

What if we met somewhere and got someone with a cellphone that has a speaker, and then we get you, Greg, on the phone to plan, like a teleconference heh. Then those who are in on the planning might actually get something accomplished.

I'm not sure how much time I'd have to do much of anything. I'm way overcommitted as it is these days. But I'm willing to at least help plan. I'm really good at organizing and planning.

I don't think we need to rush on this. But if we're going to follow through we need to have a meeting soon so we can nail down the preliminaries.

I vote here and now that we set up a committee of people who can do this meeting. Let's nominate people in this thread and anything else posted here gets put in the "ideas for discussion" file. ;)

Word up, Foll. Word up, Ho!!s.

The problem with booking in a non-venue is, as always, insurance/liability/lack of PA.

Holly has brought forth one of the critical aspects of a "Fest"; the ability to come and go. Another "Fest" aspect involves as much loafing around and eating/drinking as there is music.

Are there any parks in or around town that cater to this sort of thing?

Because I'm an alcoholic, I'd like a venue that serves beer, and an actual venue would eliminate a lot of the problems so far mentioned assuming we get a decent venue.

I don't know about Tech folks, but we can check out our equipment (PA, mics, etc) for a week or so. I'm sure y'all have much nicer stuff than we do, but I might could help in that regard.

Ha, I didn't even think about beer, because, uh...if I'm drinking, it's not beer.
So pardon on that.

& yeah, we could hypothetically use the WREK equipment, but again, if we have a real venue, there's no reason to worry about that.

Like I said, the whole 'finding a place' thing really is out of the question, because who here has the money to put up for an insurance policy?
Yeah, I didn't think so.

This is a great idea but i'm with Will on this one.

If we can't get anyone to come out for FREE drinking, then how can we get people to commit to PAY for a show?

If we have a few successful Atlanta Metal social events first then i'd say we're on our way.

I'd say the new Lenny's has the best combination of size, cheap beer, etc.

I will say the sound isn't necessarily the greatest after a recent From Exile, Omniscient show.
But i think that has more to do with the retard manning the board then their equipment. So if we could get someone good to do the sound that would help.

But the venue has ample parking and holds 300 people.
For those of you who don't know, it's in the upper part of the building where the Neutron Bomb used to be.

And considering the neighborhood, I don't think setting up a grill in the parking lot will be a problem.

They also only require the door to make at least $100 dollars. Other venues have more ridiculous minimums, including selling set numbers of tickets etc.

Can we also work on them for a better lighting system... or someone who knows what they're doing to set up the lighting? I'm sick of being disappointed by venues who have crappy lighting. For instance, I was very disappointed with 10High last Tuesday night. I had been counting on that venue for some good AV footage, but sadly whoever ran the lighting that night seemed to have been asleep at the wheel, or else Sam scared them so bad they decided to keep the lighting low so he wouldn't run everyone out.

Sorry, I doubt anyone else cares about the lighting as much as I do, but then I'm in this for the video, so that's going to always be my priority! :)

Because this will be bringing in lots more people than just the folks on this board. Hopefully we can get in a wide enough range of bands while still being tr00 and kvlt enough for Matt.

Also, WUOG already has some connections with Lenny's and I'm assuming WREK does also.

I also think we could maybe include bands from other parts of georgia and possibly the southeast.
I was really impressed with Massacre of the Umbilical Cord and they're from SC.
That way we can have more talent to choose from and we could draw fans of metal from Alabama, SC, NC, etc.
