Some others I thought of:

Pete Sandoval
Danny Carey from Tool
Inferno (from Behemoth)
Dave Grohl's Probot stuff (most of the songs sucked but I thought he sounded pretty good)
whoever drummed on At The Gates' very first album - their name escapes me at the moment

Spiritual Healing? Gene played drums on Symbolic and Individual Thought Patterns...

As for SYL, Gene's drumming isn't as adventurous, mainly because I don't think that's what they're going for with SYL. However, on Devin's albums Infinity, Physicist, and Terria, you can hear Gene doing very interesting things, not just straightforward double bass. I have heard, however, that the new SYL may lean a bit more towards the "progressive" side, instead of just being pummeling, like City and SYL.

Oh yeah I just thought of Bobby Jarzombek. He was fucking awesome with Spastik Ink and Riot, particularly the Al Dimeola cover they did. I'm not sure how his playing was with Halford, I'd have to listen to it again.

Yeah, that's what I said -> "But I guess he felt the album didn't need it."
Thanks for re-iterating I guess.

Yeah Gene rules (except for SYL monotony...)
Marcel Dissantos/Steve Flynn (Atheist)
Asgeir Mickelson (Spiral Architect)
I'm even a Lombardo fan...

then there's <a href='http://www.flexhosting.net/wwwpeart/' target='_blank'>P.E.A.R.T.</a>
I hate drum machines, but this is a little better...

Flor, Chris Pennie, John Longstreth (band slut), Pete Sandoval, and Bobby Jarzombek are the ones that come to mind. I based that on style of drumming, ability, and over all creativity. I know there are better drummers, but those are my favorites.

Flo from Cryptopsy, I'm guessing. It'll be good to see them in a few months.

If we're expanding our horizons to more progressive drummers, then I'd list Peart, Portnoy, Nick D'Virgilio (Spock's Beard, Fates Warning etc.), Dave Weckl, and a few others.

no kidding, Mikkey Dee was pretty awesome when he was w/ King Diamond tho not nearly as good in Motorhead and I really don't know about Dokken but if it was good I probably would have remembered... I think that's a prime example of how a lot of drummers are much better than what you get to hear. Either the mix takes them way out in room for vocals&guitar-wanking or the guys writing the music don't want sophisticated drum parts in the music (ala Motorhead). I think King Diamond was more into having sophisticated music and the guys in the band had the chance to shine.
