Spiderman 3 (Warning: Spoilers inside)

Who has seen this?

If you have not seen it, you might want to wait and read this after you have so I won't spoil it for you. I just wanted to put down some of my impressions of the movie while they are still somewhat fresh in my mind, and maybe see if this meshes with those of anyone else who has seen it.

Spiderman 3 is a lot deeper than the 2 previous Spiderman movies and deals with some really interesting concepts. The idea of an alien being bonding as a "symbiote" to a person -- and thereby symbolizing the eternal struggle within a person between his best and worst nature - is an interesting metaphoric device. Interesting in the fact that it is an external being, and yet when it bonds with someone it only feeds off what is internal to that person. Unlike the metaphor in Star Wars of "the dark side" which is an invisible and ubiquitous force, this alien comes down from some distant planet in a meteorite and becomes a new spiderman suit that Peter dons and subsequently uses to exact revenge upon his uncle's murderer. That alien thing was fucking awesome-looking, by the way... I only wish they'd shown more of its real form, but then that would have detracted from the element of surprise and horror that Peter feels as he finally faces what he'd put on... and as the other Peter (Topher Grace LOL, I can't stop thinking of him as being Eric) jumps in with it as he destroys it, thereby making his own final choice.

The one weak element to the movie is when Peter (Parker) realizes the one thing that can defeat it is the sound of bells/ringing. I'm not sure what the bell/ringing sound is supposed to be a metaphor of, unless it's trying to imply that you should "get religion" as Peter tells the Sandman earlier in the film. I'm just glad it didn't elaborate on that much further. I would have had to strongly disagree lol. Of course, that part could just be a plot element with absolutely no metaphoric value whatsoever... and that's ok, because it's all comic book stuff, right?

The movie had a lot of plots going on and could have been confusing, but they did a good job in meshing them together in the right places. Especially the part about MJ and her career struggles. But wasn't she a newspaper reporter in the first movie? Whatever happened to that? Oh well, she looked really cute on that stage. It's hard to beat Kirsten Dunst, she's beautiful and very likeable in just about every role I've seen her in.

I also thought the Sand man was about the coolest special effects I've seen yet. That, and the black alien thing's movements were just fucking awesome. Having done some work in 3d animation I can really appreciate the kind of work that they put into making such things look realistic. It's tricky at best because it can't be "realism" as none of those things exist in real life -- but the animators have to proceed as if they did exist.

Well those are my impressions and thoughts, hope I didn't spoil it too much for ya. Go see this movie if you haven't already!

The sound isn't a metaphor, the symbiote is just sensitive to sound.

Btw, Venom got nowhere near as much screen time as he should have :/

not SO important, but he tells Eddie Brock (the other photographer) that when he's begging Peter to have mercy on him - Peter's ticked off so he says something to the effect of "you want forgiveness? Get religion" so yeah, he's not going to let Brock go unpunished

definitely true and I was saying that when I left the theater. so many things going on and yet somehow it wasn't TOO busy and built solid character structure.

I didn't really like the first Spiderman, haven't seen the 2nd, but this was pretty awesome.

Yeah the first one was kind of ho-hum, the second was pretty good, but this one was excellent. By far one of my favorite comic book inspired movies yet.
