HALLOWEEN......what did you think?

Post by BlazeTSU » Sun September 2nd, 2007, 10:14 pm

i'm curious as to what you all thought about Rob Zombie's take on HALLOWEEN.

i thought it was at least entertaining but far from actually being scary, creepy or having any lasting effects past the doors of the theater. the only real reason for discussing it and everyone's opinions on it is solely out of curiosity b/c it was a remake of such a great film.

i thought it was better than most of the sequels and better than most of the recent remakes we've been feed.....save DAWN OF THE DEAD and THE HILLS HAVE EYES remakes.

unfortunately it didn't stack up to the original movie in any aspect other than blood or budget. it lacked any true horror and relied fully on jump scares, blood and shaking close-ups that just make you dizzy instead of freak you out. it wasn't a movie about some boy turned into the true essence of evil by some unexplained mysterious twist of fate. it wasn't a tale of an unstoppable, unflinching immortal "bogeyman" but rather a story about a misguided kid that turned into a really huge man that was pissed off, clumsy and had a big knife.

the character's and their development was another shortcoming of the film. i really only liked young michael myers and his mom. other than that the rest of the characters were rushed and unlikeable. even Dr. Loomis, who was believable in the original as being obsessed and deathly afraid of "it", the evil that michael had become, just dwindled into a second rate child psychologist that seemed not worried about michael or his murderous ways until he escapes.

upside......it looked good. i really liked the look and feel of the shots, save the shaky cameras during some of the murders. it was rated R and wasn't afraid to show why. it wasn't packed full of WB rejects and typical jokes. the soundtrack was great.

thats some of what i thought about it......i want to hear what you all thought.

i agree with blaze pretty much, not scary at all aside from the jump suprise scenes, i found it entertaining, but kind of weak, not terrible though by any means, i will probably go see it again, it was just so different so its hard to compare, my main disappoint was that half of the fucking movie was leading up to the halloween night and everything just happened so fast, like 20 minutes into the "halloween" night part she was already running out the front door and shit, but the chick from halloween 4 and 5 looked hot as fuck and it had some nice boob shots, id give it a 6 or 7 out of 10

I enjoyed the movie overall.

I agree with Blaze about Loomis though. A lot of half-assed charachter development there. And there were more than a few things that I just thought "WTF?" Slutty chick's BF comes back into the room with a sheet over his head and she doesn't notice that he's 7 ft tall now??? Loomis knows that MM has gone back to Haddonfield, he checks the cemetary where his mother was buried but DOESN'T GO TO HIS CHILDHOOD HOME where there are dead bodies, a headstone in the basement and, oh yeah, the giant homicidal maniac...

I thought it had some good factors though..mostly sounds. I loved the sound of the aluminum baseball bat as he bashed that guy's skull in. And hearing the baby crying when Mommy Myers blew her brains out...that was just fucked up. I thought some of the stuff with young MM was pretty creepy in general. I'll also give it bonus points for violence. I thought it was more brutal than scary. To the films credit though...my wife fucking hated it. She found it utterly disturbing.

The real horror, however, almost occurred in the audience. If everyone in that theater who did not posess the common decency or perhaps the ability to shut their god forsaken cocksucker for an hour and a half would have only shared one collective throat, I would have been giddy at the prospect of tearing it out.

Team Rob Zombie!
Motherfucker can do no wrong.
I'm not scared by scary movies; I like seeing scary shit in thrillers instead.
Complete and total brutality is what he does, and I love it.
I seriously think that he's the pioneer of the American horror of today.

i actually think that all the korean and japanese horror movies are total crap. the UK puts out much better horror movies than either of those countries. and america puts out great horror movies too but you just never hear about them b/c hollywood won't touch them.

I don't think you know what I'm talking about...there is no possible way that you've seen a Park Chan Wook film and think it's crap.
This stuff isn't horror per se, but it's big with people who are into horror just because the stuff is so fucked up psychologically.

well, from what i know of that guy he is a different story all together. if japanese movies can get past the "creepy dead girl" bullshit and just get down to business like OLDBOY did then i'm all for them. but i wasn't including OLDBOY in with the horror.

What are some good Asian horror films? My knowledge of them is limited (Audition, Ichi the Killer, The Eye, and Dark Water are all I've seen) but I really like them.

Yeah, gimmie some recommended titles of the 'psychologically fucked up' stuff - i'm too lazy to use the googles on the interweb tubes.
