MASTODON's management has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:
"MASTODON guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds suffered a severe head injury after his performance on Sunday night's [September 9] MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas. He is being treated by a Las Vegas hospital where he remains hospitalized."
It is rumored that Hinds' injury was sustained during a brutal assault that took place shortly after MASTODON performed "Colony of Birchmen" at the Palms Casino Fantasy Suites in Las Vegas. However, it should be noted that this information has not yet been corroborated by an official source.

On Sep 9th, following the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, Hinds was involved in an altercation in the west valet lot of the Mandalay Bay hotel with two fellow musicians, including System of a Down bassist, Shavarsh "Shavo" Odadjian. Hinds, who was intoxicated after the band's performance at the VMAs, ran into Odadjian and his friend, took off his own shirt, and began to hit Odadjian and his friend with his shirt whlie acting belligerent. Hinds then punched Odadjian's friend, musician William Hudson in the chest and face. Hudson and Odadjian then punched Hinds in the face and knocked him to the ground. Hinds was taken to University Medical Center with a Traumatic Epidermal injury and was put into the Intensive Care Unit. Odadjian and Hudson were questioned by police at the scene, but no charges have been filed. Hinds was released from UMC on September 14 and is currently recovering at an unknown location. He is expected to make a full recovery
