how long is too long?
so, i was having a conversation today about set lengths for local and relatively unknown metal bands. i feel that more often than not, local metal bands overstay their welcome onstage. i'm always interested to hear other people's opinions about stuff like this.
what do you all think is a good length for a local metal band's set?
personally i think half an hour is ideal.......i'll go into the details of my opinion later.

Why do you keep using holly's account? I expect something completely ridiculous but instead I get a regular post.holly wrote:Unfortunately, most local bands in ANY area are not on par with the big boys. Less is better. I pay to see the touring bands and friends' bands, not Joe Shmoe's new band (unless they are totally awesome).

Anyways,This all depends on whether the band sucks or not.

Always better to leave the audience wanting more.

anyways, yeah if the band is awesome, give them at least 45 minutes. Sometimes, I'll try to get to a show early so I can catch the local band...especially Sybaritic. They're freakin' awesome!
They had you do a drug test and the forgot to test for drugs???
I remember From Exile definitely did this.Metalfreak wrote:AmoebicDysentery wrote:Amoebic Dysentery always tried to keep our set pretty short (well, from 2005 on, anyways). Especially when everything sounds like a giant fart, 20 minutes is more than enough.

Well...All the bands during that show besides Arsis and Enslaved were pretty rough to sit through..
Also,I remember Angel corpse (Out of all bands) had a really long set, which made you tired of them by the time it was over..
If they didn't play more than like 20 minutes, their whole set would be two songs.Brian wrote:Locals get too much time at almost every show I've seen. Don't get me wrong, I like From Exile, but they played for as long as Enslaved at the show in November. That's just not right.
& they really didn't have the same amount of time, dude.
Enslaved's songs aren't so short that they played that big of a set list in the same amount of time.
Oh,maybe In Exile just seemed really long.holly wrote:If they didn't play more than like 20 minutes, their whole set would be two songs.Brian wrote:Locals get too much time at almost every show I've seen. i think 30 minutes is tops any local should play. i've seen a lot of local bands that blow me away with their first few songs only to walk out on them after they continue to play for an hour or more.
local bands need to realize that nobody knows their damn music. so even if its the best shit on the planet, it all starts sounding the same and gets boring as hell after 30-40 minutes. playing longer than that just seems like a rookie mistake or an ego stroke to me.
i like the 30 minutes or 5-6 song rule..........after that no one seems to give a damn. if people want to see more tell them about your next show and keep your setlists varied.
and when i say locals, i'm not talking about bands like mastodon, withered, daath.......etc....etc.....they are all local to atlanta but obviously have national appeal and albums out that people are familiar with. which should give them an extra 10 to 15 minutes.

If I remember correctly From Exile played for 45-50 and Enslaved played for 55 including encore. Arsis only played for 35. How does that make sense? I'm not trying to shit on From Exile or anything because like I said, I enjoy their music, but locals should never have more or equal time as national bands.holly wrote:If they didn't play more than like 20 minutes, their whole set would be two songs.Brian wrote:Locals get too much time at almost every show I've seen. I do agree with this statement.Brian wrote: but locals should never have more or equal time as national bands.
I don't think every local band should be only limited to only 30 minutes though. If they're good, let them play a bit longer.
I also agree with Blaze about the local bands keeping their set varied. I don't like it when I hear the same songs over and over again! Shit, that goes for any band!
