I know a lot of you guys don't really like this type of music, but damn, Iced Earth (w/Barlow) and Amorphis are headlining. They're going to tear that place down!

I heard of Iced Earth headlining a few hours ago and that possibly made me even less likely to go with this abysmal lineup, but Amorphis almost makes up for all the crap. Jon Oliva, Riverside, Iron Savior, and Andromeda are alright too.

However, convince Iced Earth to play 90% of their setlist from Night of the Stormrider and Burnt Offerings and I'll buy a ticket the day they go on sale.

I really like Riverside, Elvenking's first two albums, and Andromeda, but the 2 headliners are the main reason I'm going. I'm not really a fan of the rest of the bands.

Yeah, this will be my 4th year there, it's always a good time even though this year's lineup isn't as great

I heard the price of tix went up...

Iced Earth is awesome! I love Burnt Offerings! I'd go to see them and Amorphis but I'm not going to pay over $100 for this. That's way over my budget unless something good comes along.
They had you do a drug test and the forgot to test for drugs???

They did, they're about $115 now. They went up 4 or 5 bucks this year because instead of having 10 bands, there are 12 playing this year.

 I know it's a festival and all but damn, that's a bit pricey! Music Midtown had hundreds of bands and the last year they had it, tix were about $75. They went up about $30 from the year before so I didn't go!
I do want to support the musicians but not if I can't afford it!

One of my friends goes every year...she has one of those special badges and willingly pays extra for the stupid thing every year! She told me that thing was like $175 or something. All I can say is that is $175 I will have and she won't!

Oh yeah it's pricey for sure, but Midtown had a lot more attendees to divide the costs up between, corporate sponsorships, all that stuff. For ProgPower 90% of the bands need to be flown in from Europe so all the flight and visa costs are a bitch and there are only 1200 people there to cover the cost. I usually have to start saving up a few months in advance for this thing.

I heard some people sponsor some of the bands there...like poeple here from Atlanta who go to shows and stuff! Only 1200? Damn, they should get a bigger venue maybe? It sells out every year! :D

Yeah there are people who sponsor bands, Paul from WREKage does it every year. But when you compare an individual sponsorship to a big corporate sponsorship/advertising it is a lot mess money you know? Really this year's lineup isn't that great except for the headliners and 2 or 3 of the other bands but for me it is worth going to because I have a lot of friends who travel to Atlanta once a year for this and that's the only time I can really see them.

simply put - you must experience the festival to understand it.

at a cost of $117 this year for 12 bands, that's less than $10 per band.

this also allows you the opportunity to purchase exclusive and limited edition material in a dealers room... the opportunity to meet and greet with your favorite artists throughout the weekend... scheduled autograph sessions... photo ops... all without having to wait around a tour bus for a couple of hours hoping a 'rock star' will have pity on you long enough to step out and give you a minute of their time.

Unlike Gigantour, where cameras are banned and where you're forced to purchase the artist's latest cd from a monopolizing distributor for a jacked-up price with that being the ONLY item you are allowed to have autographed while being herded through a lightning fast line without any time to actually tell an artist how much their music means to you... ProgPower USA is an intimate atmosphere where the artists genuinely care about what you have to say to them.

What most people fail to understand is that in a smaller venue with the more intimate atmosphere, these bands will hang out in the lobbies and bar areas and also in the venue watching other bands perform. They feel comfortable enough to do this.

Like I said, it's an experience you will not understand until you save/spend the money to attend one year. And once you do, you'll have stories to tell for years to come. :D

I definitely agree with this. That's a reason why I love smaller venues.

I guess I failed to say that I'm not much into the whole prog/ power thing so that's probably why I don't see the value in it. I don't really know anyone in that scene (except for a few people who live here) I know that people who absolutely love it will more than willingly spend the money. And besides, I'm going to Maryland Deathfest so that factors into my budget! 8) There's 3 times as much bands and it's cheaper BUT I do have to pay travel expenses for that.
