That's the point I was trying to make. A lot of people say stuff like Watain's newest album isn't black metal, because it's not how the "originators" would want it. What I was basically saying is how anal people get about their kvlt black metal being like "original black metal" or "the way it was intended."Brian wrote:I'm sorry but that is the dumbest argument anybody could have possibly come up with. Using that logic, Streetlight Manifesto isn't ska because they don't sound like Toots and the Maytals, Necrophagist isn't death metal because they don't sound like Possessed, and Sigur Ros isn't post-rock because they don't sound like Talk Talk.anathematized_one wrote:If you really want to get that anal about, "founding fathers," technically, nothing is black metal unless it sounds like Bathory, Mercyful Fate, or Venom.
I was just pointing out that people say shit like that, when they don't even take it back to the real beginning. I've met people like that. And they would agree that Necrophagist isn't death metal, or at least "good death metal."
I was just trying to point out the fallacy in people who use that "the way the originators intended" argument.
Now I'm also not bashing on raw, lo-fi black metal. I just don't like most of it. However, what I am ripping a new one on is when people call bands like Dissection, or Enochian Crescent, or any other not kvlt raw lo-fi black metal band - not black metal.

I hate that kvlt lo-fi raw stuff. People like to say, "oh, black metal isn't supposed to be likable."
Where did this ideology come from? Alright, no other form of metal feels that way. All other genres of metal have evolved and actually sought to be more technical, have better recording quality, and better written music. They try to say, "the founding fathers of black metal wanted it that way, bla bla bla." I can't tell you how many countless interviews I've seen where these "founding fathers" have said they weren't Satanic, and didn't give a fuck about being Satanic. They admit that using the horrible production quality was a gimmick. They actually admit that they only did it for the kvlt points. In a way, that is being more poser than writing black metal that isn't lo-fi and raw. These people I'm t
alking about are from the first second wave black metal bands, like Darkthrone, Mayhem, etc.. A lot of people I know don't consider bands like Venom and Mercyful Fate to be black metal. Well Venom was definitely more than just speed metal. If you really want to get that anal about, "founding fathers," technically, nothing is black metal unless it sounds like Bathory, Mercyful Fate, or Venom. But that being aside, when in the fuck did ANY of the first or second wave "founding fathers" write a God damn rule book saying that black metal had to sound like pure ass?
If you consider bands like Venom and so forth to be at least in part black metal, like I do, they got better with time. Better composition, better recording quality, so on and so forth.
Alright another point I'd like to make. Honestly, what is wrong with evolving and making clear, decipherable music? Who gives a fuck if other people like the same thing you like? Really, why does it matter?
I prefer black metal bands more like Enochian Crescent, Watain, Dissection, Vinerland, etc.. Now I don't like Dimmu, with the exception of Stormblåst and some songs from Enthroned Darkness Triumphant.
Honestly, the whole "kvlt" thing doesn't make any logical sense to me whatsoever.
Sorry if my post is tl;dr. Not sorry if it offended you, or you disagree with me.
Trust me, I know more about metal than you could ever possibly dream to achieve. I'm not going to bother saying anything else to you or reading any more of your nonsensical "I'm kvlter than u r" bullshit.
Don't be so pretentious and try to mature a little bit.

I was thinking of Wrath of the Tyrant. That thing is a mess. The music actually is more intelligent than a lot of the other black metal of the time, but that production ... Good lord. I love the "necro" sound, as long as its a production technique, and not the result of the master tapes being mutilated (or whatever happened to that album).Blarg! wrote:And I still don't understand how Emperor is raw..I always saw them as going in a more atmospheric and sort of dignified path, in comparison to bands like Darkthrone, ect.

Hear Hear!! I am enjoying this thread as well although I have no opinions to offer as I never cared as much about black metal. But this is an interesting and informing read.anathematized_one wrote:You're that douche bag kid who think's he's all that.Blarg! wrote:I wonder when people will start educating themselfs on a topic before writing a lengthy opinion about it.anathematized_one wrote:I am not going to bother reading this thread, because I know there is a 98% chance that a metal fight will break out. hell yeah black n roll is great! I haven't heard too many bands with this particular type of sound but I do like it. Blood Cult is a good example. Some of Ancient's songs have this sound to...like the song Horroble.Brian wrote:Holy mother of wrong! Black-and-roll kicks ass! I was not trying to be arrogant, I was simply iterating that I do know what I am talking about and that I am no uneducated when it comes to metal.AmoebicDysentery wrote:Http://metal-archives.com

Blarg, I gurantee, is around 16-18, and probably hasn't been listening to metal for more than maybe 2 or so years.
I've been listening to metal for 15 years. My older brothers Adam and Chris got me into it when I was 5 or 6 years old (they were roughly around 16-18 years old).
I grew up listening to everything from Deep Purple and Rush (thanks to my father), to Venom, Cancer, and Possessed (thanks to them).
I'm not trying to be arrogant or anything, and if you don't believe me, that's fine too, I really couldn't care less what some kids on a metal forum based out of Georgia think.
I remember walking into a convenience store a few years ago:
There was a shattered jar of pickles lying in shards and vinegary, cucumber chunks on the floor. Betwixt the remnants, the customer and store proprietor (of whom both were of Middle Eastern descent) were arguing back and forth, "NO! It is YOU that is wrong!"
Anyhoo, this thread reminds me of that. Thanks for making me chuckle, board.

I personally don't like the whole "black n' roll" thing. Would you consider Lifelover to be in that group too? They're like indie/black metal. I don't like it either.Metalfreak wrote:hell yeah black n roll is great! I haven't heard too many bands with this particular type of sound but I do like it. Blood Cult is a good example.
