Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement
I'm pretty sure all of us here download music, movies, games, etc...this thing is fucked.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Count ... _Agreement
The US, the EU, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, Canada, and South Korea are all in on this and it will be decided upon at G8 in July.
A few quotes from the article:
"It would also impose new cooperation requirements upon internet service providers (ISPs), including perfunctory disclosure of customer information, and restrict the use of online privacy tools."
"Similarly, it provides for criminalization of copyright infringement, granting law enforcement the powers to perform criminal investigation, arrests and pursue criminal citations or prosecution of suspects who may have infringed on copyright."
"The leaked document includes a provision to force internet service providers to provide information about suspected copyright infringers without a warrant, making it easier for the record industry to sue music file sharers and for officials to shut down non-commercial BitTorrent websites such as The Pirate Bay."
Thoughts?

agreed. I hope this agreement does not go through...even though it probably will in the future. They seriously should have warrants. I don't want my shit searched at the airport...I don't even download anything illegally to start with!Brian wrote:People wanting to stop piracy? Fine. I can't blame them even though I enjoy piracy myself.
But the government forcing ISP's to hand over data? No warrants? Being forced to have your computer checked and handing over your passwords when you're going on a flight? That's just way too far.
They had you do a drug test and the forgot to test for drugs???
I think I'm in the minor here, but I hope they put a stop to piracy.
Fucking support your favored bands, people. Buy their music. So what if you're broke? I am too. I still buy CDs when I can.
I know a lot of you download, and I definitely see its advantages for finding stuff that is extremely rare. I will admit, I do have a few downloaded mp3s here and there, but 95+% of my music on my computer, is from albums that I have bought, and I own. But I am all about purchasing CDs from labels, and whatnot.
That's just me.

See, like, unless the band you're supporting is on a small label, them dicks won't see much of the revenue.Vhyle wrote:I think I'm in the minor here, but I hope they put a stop to piracy.

If you want to support a band, go to their show and buy their merchandise.
Alright, cool. I don't have $25 to spend on one import CD for a lot of the bands I like, so guess what? I download those albums, because a lot of my favorite bands have little to no distribution on this entire continent.Vhyle wrote:I think I'm in the minor here, but I hope they put a stop to piracy.

Fuck, I guess I should be arrested and/or fined because I like obscure music.
I don't see how they are going to know who has what unless it's a random search. I think this is bullshit and wouldn't really give it a second thought.
If I am wrong then.... I guess I will cross that bridge when and if I get there.

"The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of the blessings. The inherent blessing of socialism is the equal sharing of misery."
Like I said before, I see the advantages of downloading shit that is almost impossible to find. I'm not against that.Brian wrote:Alright, cool. What I AM against, is people who download EVERYTHING upon fucking everything, regardless of how obscure it is. That's what I was trying to get at, but I guess I didn't make my point very well.
I wasn't trying to bitch at you or anything nor am I trying to make this into a discussion about the morality of downloading. I was just using that to illustrate what could possibly happen if this thing goes through. Pirated files are pirated files, whether they're of Hinder or of Darkspace.Vhyle wrote:Like I said before, I see the advantages of downloading shit that is almost impossible to find.
