Metallica is one of the best and most influential metal bands in history. Accept it. You'll be happier for it.jswift wrote:I can't even think of a witty rejoinder for this. It's Metallica. It's going to suck. Accept it. You'll all be happier for it.
they've been around for 25 friggin years man, they've earned the right to put out one shitty album.
and Will, St. Anger was horrible but this time you can hear clips of the songs at missionmetallica.com and you can tell that this one will be worlds better than St. Anger.

One shitty album?
Honestly, I'd love to be able to like Metallica again. Or respect them for that matter. Now that they've dismissed Bob Cockrock, maybe they'll make another Metal album. Who knows...maybe even a good Metal album. They've got the potential to do so. They just haven't tapped it in the last two decades.
I'll give 'em this; They've made a solid decision in their choice of bass player. Trujilo is a fucking beast! (SUICIDAL FTW!)

yeah, ONE shitty album.
like'em or not Load and Reload are solid albums. good songs, good arrangments, solid lyrics and good vocals.....they just aren't metal albums. an album not being metal doesn't classify it a shitty album.
matter of fact, bands like mastodon and baroness play eerily similiar music to that of Load and Reload and everybody thinks they are the shit.
for once, i'd love to hear someone tell me why those albums are bad other than the fact that they aren't metal. i'd be willing to bet that most people that have such strong opinions haven't even listened to the shit they are knockin.

For me, the thing is that they really set the bar with their earlier work. If a totally new band came out of nowhere and released the black album, load and reload, I might have thought, "hey, these guys aren't bad." Even if I just hadn't heard the earlier material, and one of those albums were the first thing I heard, I would most likely enjoy them for what they are.
But that wasn't the case for me. I was a huge fan of the early material. They were absolutely my favorite band! I heard Garage days when it came out. I bought that, Kill 'em All, Puppets, and Lightning over the course of the next 2 months (as well as a couple of recommended Slayer albums), and every other tape I owned (mostly rock stuff) began gathering dust. Justice kicked my ass. I saw them both times they came through on that tour. If you look at my eighth grade year book, every single metalhead in the school is wearing a Metallica shirt in their yearbook pic. They were THE shit!
After Justice, I got into a lot of other bands. Testament, Kreator, Overkill, Sodom, Sepultura... But I knew that the next Metallica album was going to leave all of those bands in the dust...
The black album came out and a little part of me died. I hated it. A few of my friends loved it. (All of my little sister's friends loved it.) To be fair it was a good Rock album. Maybe even a great one. You make a solid point there. But I didn't want a Rock album from what I considered to be the greatest Metal band ever.
I'll listen to the new one when it comes out. But the only way I'll buy it is if it is the album I've been waiting 20 years for them to release. Not Master of Puppets 2...It needs to blow Master of Puppets away!
Anyway, I know that you're a fan and that you and I come from different places on this. We've had this discussion before. I have no desire to change your pov or detract from your enjoyment of the band in any way. I'm just explaining why I feel the way I do.

I'm with Strange on this one. I bought Master the week that it came out. (I've warned you guys that I'm an old fart.) Metallica were, indeed, the shit. Justice bothered me a little, but I eventually grew to like it. Garage Days Re-Revisited did, indeed, kick ass. I stopped buying their albums when the Black Album was released.Strange wrote:For me, the thing is that they really set the bar with their earlier work. The thing is, they had spent seven years talking about metal and being musicians for the music's sake and making fun of Motley Crue and Bon Jovi. ("If you came here to see spandex, eye makeup, and the words 'Ooh baby' in every fuckin' song, this ain't the fuckin' band. We came to bang some heads." Hetfield at Donington, 1985)
And then the Black Album came out. You are correct, Blaze -- I have not purchased any of the Bob Rock era albums and I have not listened to all of the tracks on them. But I heard enough of what was on the radio and MTV. And I don't really ever intend to.
Clearly, their philosophy had changed and a lot of us felt that we had been left out in the cold. I'm not talking about the inclusion of slower songs, as in the transition from KEA to RTL. I once saw an interview with Lars and they wanted Bob Rock because of the sound on Dr. Feelgood. WTF. They were making fun of these guys just a handful of years before. In my judgment, success caused them to betray their values and that is why a lot of the older fans don't respect them any more.
St. Anger seemed to auger a return to the early ethos, but a lot of it seemed sort of uninspired, to me. I haven listened to it five times, perhaps. Their metal period appears to be over and maybe they should just go back to hard rock. They seem to do that fairly well now.
*****blanket response to Alan and knucklehead******
my history with Metallica is the same. I got into them when MOP came out and freaked out over everything Metallica......and then Slayer, Testament, Kreator, Sepultura, Megadeth....etc... The thing that really got me, even as a kid was that Metallica totally kicked metal in the ass. Never before had their been a band that was so melodic yet so aggressive(as i've stated many times before). Metal forever changed the day that Ride The Lightning was unleashed onto the world.
Hell, I loved every album including the Black Album. Sure, it was different and sure it was kind of a letdown to see Metallica videos on MTV but it was also badass. My favorite band was on tv throwing darts at Kip Winger........and its hard to deny that The Black Album isn't heavy as balls live.
Load came out and i hated that garbage. I felt like they had ripped my guts out......hell, when MTV was hyping "The World Premiere of Metallica's New Video" before anyone had ever heard it I skipped school just so I wouldn't miss it. When the video started I put a fist through the wall.
Then Reload came out and I thought it was even worse. I even started to hate them a little bit too.
I guess I hated Load and Reload until S&M came out, even though I'd actually never listened to either album in full. I'm one of the few that thought S&M was fantastic. The vocals took some time to get used to but i still thought it kicked major ass. Songs like "Human" and "Outlaw Torn" and "No Leaf Clover" pretty much floored me. Those songs kicked major ass in an entirely different way.
I started to realize that they just got older but were still making awesome music. It wasn't like they started playing the same'ol'shit every one else was playing so its hard to really call them sellouts. I mean, they actually took a huge rish on music that they obviously liked and weren't just trying to ride some mainstream wave. They had no guarantee that anyone would actually even like it at all.
I've since listened to both Load and Reload completely and realized that there really arern't any bad songs on them.....its just not metal. which is actually fine with me. A band that has been around for over 25 years and given us 4 of the best metal albums that were ever created can make whatever album they want now.......they still, at one point, were the best metal band on the planet.
oh, and knucklehead, the production on Dr. Feelgood is pretty badass. Thats what they wanted. I don't think they wanted to go glam on us, they just didn't want Motley Crue to have better production than they had.
BTW, although I've come to accept both Load and Reload I can honestly say that if i saw Bob Rock on the street I'd rip his throat out!
and the two things that are hard to overlook with Metallica are.....
1. I Dissapear
2. St. Anger

Oh, sure. I didn't intend to suggest that they wanted to go glam. The thing is, if you to a restaurant and the presentation of the food is just fantastic but the food tastes like shit, would you go back? That's why I didn't understand the interest in Bob Rock. Motley Crue and Metallica were not competing. They were doing two totally separate things, appealing, by and large, to two separate crowds. Maybe the production on Feelgood is fantastic. What the one has to do with the other, I never understood.BlazeTSU wrote:oh, and knucklehead, the production on Dr. Feelgood is pretty badass. Thats what they wanted. I guess they just made a lot of choices starting in 1988 they left me mystified. They were the greatest speed metal/thrash band in the world, and they wanted to go hard rock. That's up to them, obviously. And maybe it's just that my teenage-hero-worship sensibility was offended. But I've never really understood.

Right on. I try not to hate on them. (It would be a lot easier if Lars would just not talk.) They just really let me down so I just kinda wrote them off. Not that I think they owed me anything personally...that's just how I looked at it.
I wasn't pissed at 'em for making money, or having videos on MTV. If you're a musician, music is your art. If you're a successful musician, it is also your product. Sell it for all it's worth! I just didn't like the songs or the direction they took. I didn't like the simple riffs/arrangements. I didn't like the smoother/less aggressive vocals. They just seemed like a completely different band. (The production, ironically was pretty damn good. Go fig.)
And the Bob Rock connection was always pretty obvious to me:
Metallica = Epic Records
Motley Crue = Epic Records
Metallica + Bob Rock = Epic Phail
Anyway, like I said, I'd love for them to put out an album I could enjoy. From what I've heard about this one, you (Blaze) will definitely like it.

wow, did we just have a mature discussion about a subject we felt differently about on the atlanta metal forums?
wow, they must be throwin snowballs in hell today.
its cool to get on here and disagree, albeit slightly and no body feels the need to personally attack the others. kudos gentlemen, kudos.

unless i missed it, how come no one has pointed out what an embarassment 'some kind of monster' is? i just can't respect a band that a) needs group therapy and b) releases it as a dvd. i was too young to grow up with metallica and i got into metal pretty late in the game, but i enjoy metallica's first 5 albums and i agree with blaze that s&m is a cool concept that turned out well. i just think their time has passed. they will always be enormously important and i think it's good they still tour (although i hear lars needs to re-learn how to play) but any new music they put out is going to feel like a lame attempt to recapture past glory or an even lamer attempt to remain relevant and influential musically.
Fuck it, Dude, let's go bowling.
