jesus christ where to begin.

Boris completely blew my mind. i just stared in awe when they played their last few songs. plus this was just straight up epic.

Image

Skeletonwitch fucking slayed again
Neurosis may have been the most amazing performance ive ever seen. when they started to play To the Wind i was just speechless.
and mastodon played Crack the Skye with Scott from Neurosis, i fucking lost it. and lol at me getting brent's pic, i totally still have bill's pick from like 2 years ago.

overall, best show ever? my god yes.

Highlights for me...........

seeing old friends
meeting new friends
Toxic Haulocaust
Kylesa
Skeletonwitch

i ended up just hanging out most of the day and didn't really watch a lot of bands. i really wanted to catch Warbringer but for some reason never made it. Coalesce was high on my list to see but since they played in purgatory i didn't even bother.

i wasted 40 minutes of my day standing in front of Cryptopsy.........wow, how far they've fallen. i was super letdown by their set. they cleared the room like a damn bomb threat. how could they have gone down so far to go from death metal gods to being the only band that actually cleared a room yesterday. they played everything way too fast, the vocals sucked and nothing sounded impressive, powerful or heavy. they solidified their "middle of the bill" status. at least i got the chance to see them w/lord worm play None So Vile from start to finish.

and another highlight of the day was the post show Magestic Special and milkshake.........the drive home was not so grand.

You bastards have fun, and let us shut-ins know what it was like. I want to hear of riots and pillaging!

no riots or pillaging or problems getting in. i think the "extra printed tickets" was nothing more than a rumor and propaganda to get people to show up. i got there at 1:15 and walked right in. some friends of mine showed up right before Neurosis played which was well after dark and had no trouble getting in.

there were tons of people there though.........and a large tent covering the outdoor stage. i was very impressed with the entire production of the event.

I tried to persuade my buddy to leave yesterday around 9:00 or so and, luckily, he would not have it. For some reason, my calves are killing me, today. Sometimes, you just have to push through.

Highlights for me were Salome, WITTR and 1349. I didn't know about Salome -- holy buckets of heavy! 1349 would have been more enjoyable, but for the meatheads that were throwing punches in the pit. The guys directly in front of me were objecting pretty loudly to the moshing at a black metal show. One of the guys got thrown out. And then the other sucker punched one of the guys in front of me. He was not moshing -- he just squared up and punched him. Needless to say, that meathead got thrown out, too. If Todd had not insisted on staying, we would have missed the fun with 1349.

Bands I saw:
Kylessa (two drummers: I didn't know!)
Sudaikra (sound sucked so we split. You could hear vocals and drums only)
Salome (Obviously inspired by Bullhead-era Melvins)
Withered
Skeletonwitch
Toxic Holocaust (speed metal)
Krallice (math black metal?)
Warbringer
WITTR
Cryptopsy (walked out)
Neurosis (catching some air)
Mastodon (waiting for 1349)
1349.

(Most of these notes are for my own reference -- I'm sure you guys already know all of these bands...)

Obviously, we didn't see full sets of all those band. But, all in all, it was a good, good day.

I didn't make it down at all, as I was waiting at the house for a MySpace reply from one of the bands regarding passes...and then it got to be too late, and I figured (from all the stories) that arriving there at, like, 6pm would probably mean I couldn't get in at all. (I slept until noon anyway after staying at WREKage until past 3am. :) )

Sounds like it went well except that the set-times were sometimes screwed up.

Tim H. told me that people down there -- I guess from the venue or production staff -- were singing the praises of Scion, so I'm glad it turned out okay. \m/

Got home last night, real hungry and real tired.

What an event, thats all I have to say, it was non-stop from start to finish and I was all over the place.

Bands I saw:

Kylesa (These guys impressed me, saw em the night before at criminal records too)
Sudikara (Wasnt really my thing, but these guys put on a solid show)
Salome (Wasnt really digging the music, except a few riffs here and there, but their vocals sent shivers down me. Nice suprise for sure.)
Skeletonwich (Holy shit what a circle pit, Probably the most wild live show Ive been a part of. I got my ass handed to me in the pit)
US Christmas (Interesting take on psychadelic rock, definately a nice suprise.)
Boris (Dont really get why everyone goes apeshit over these guys, Id call them modern vintage rock)
Withered (BAND OF THE DAY! Anyone who was there for withered's set knows how crushing it was)
Krallice (Real nice suprise, I hadnt heard these guys before the fest and now I am offically a fan)
Rwake (Rocked the house, rwake got alot of people going, alot of people came to see them)
High on Fire (Matt pike needs to stop smoking Marlboro Reds before he sounds like Lemmy from Motorhead, their set was ok, but his vocals wernt top notch)
Tyr (Wasnt my thing, wasnt very loud at all either, I think the sound guy in purgatory was having some problems)
Cryptopsy (I agree with Blaze, big dissapointment, their vocalist sucks, horrible annunciation, just did the same thing over and over and screamed occasionally, seeing Flo Monier live again though made it all worth while, the guy is a machine!)
Zoroaster (Big dissapointment, Im a huge zoroaster fan, but If they dont get to use their own equipment its really not a zoroaster experience at all. I think brent was pretty pissed about them having to use the regular backline in purgatory, along with all the technical problems they were having. Cant blame them.)
1349 (Im not that much into black metal but these guys seemed to be getting a good response from everyone in hell. I was also digging the tone he was getting from that guitar out of the mesa half stack.)

All in all, this was a wild day of metal and I had a great time, I saw a few familiar faces from the wrekage boards but everyone was in transition, Im still a bit in disbelief that I got to see a ton of awesome bands for free.

did ANYONE see baroness? they played great but did anyone notice how wide John Baizley's eyes were. he HAD to be on something. but once again...they were my personal fav. from the show. they played SOOO fucking good. i loved rwake so much too. very close second.

good thing the weather was okay yesterday compared to the snowing of today.

Scion should do this EVERY year here in atlanta.

Did Nachtmystium not show, or were they so unremarkable that no one has mentioned them yet? I thought I saw someone post that thet canceled, but then I also saw someone say that Wolves... did as well, and that apparently wasn't the case. Or I could be imagining all of this.

Nachtmystium did not play. I have no information why.

Wolves in the Throne Room did. You might be thinking of the show at Criminal Records, the night before. Something about how Vice Magazine or Scion wanted an exclusive engagement, or something.

Apocalyptic Visions didn't play, either. I really wanted to see HATE-FILLED CRICKETS!!!
