LOCAL "SCENE" ?
In y'all's opinon, what are the unsung, unappreciated local metal bands in GA?

Seriously, I've always said that Atlanta has a lot of great bands, a few really good venues and a lot of people who like Metal...but for some reason it never clicks as a scene. Well...not since the 90's anyway.
Most of the people who come to our shows are friends of ours. We do get out there and promote (how many of you have I not put a flyer in your hand or sold/tried to sell you a ticket?) but hardly anyone ever comes out to our shows because they've heard of us and wanted to check us out, or just wanted to go out and check out a band.
And I really don't think it's because we suck (Not ruling that out. I just don't think that's the reason!). I think people here just don't go out of their way to check out unsigned bands.
Let the joyous celebrations of Hell begin!

What? To be "successful?"
I don't think anyone needs to do that... !
Hipsters are parasites; they feed off the latest trend(s) and them move on from there. Metalheads can't help themsleves. They're stuck for life.

The off handed hipster comment was mostly replying to Strange's post about people not coming out to shows. I'm not advocating catering to trendy crowds or whatever.
I'd reccomend just going to various local shows and seeing what you find. An Apocalyptic Visions interview would probably be hillarious.

Back when I played in Damnage, the 'scene' or at least the crowds to metal shows was something to see.
More than a thousand heads at any show was easily attainable. Even more at larger venues. ...and that was for our shows.
Other bands out there like Nihilist and so on also had consistent large draws.

Brian's list is right on. I'd also include :
Hellgoat
Malefic
Avulsion (regularly active or not)
Winds of Malice
Prime Mover
Amoebic Dysentery
Xeroderma
Severed Faith
Let the Night Roar
I'm just some dude, but I feel like I keep a pretty decent ear to the ground with what's going on locally and that's about all I could come up with.
Strange makes a valid point. Apocalyptic Visions (in my opinion) is probably the most active touring bands of those listed so far. Those guys regularly criss-cross the US and even Mexico on a regular basis, but when they play Atlanta, I'm one of maybe three or four other people in the whole club. A part of me is fine with that. I know those three or four other people are probably "stuck for life" too. At the same time, I can't help but cringe when I meet a true local who can't name one real metal act in the whole city that doesn't have a label backing it up...and I'm a transplant from roadkill Mississippi.

I'm an oldtimer, so my local metal exposure was to bands like Nihilist, Necropolis, Hallow's Eve, and Threshold of Pain.
Sure, shows then were well-attended. Shit, I can even remember the Wreck Room being packed for local metal.
Totally clueless as to what's what today. Had no idea there were that many bands going at it. How the fuck would you know? It's not like Creative Loafing is going to run a feature on them... Local zines? Have no idea.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback and I'll be checking all of these bands out.

don't forget We're Not Gonna Take It either (see my sig)VOEGTLIN wrote:The reason I am asking is I'm trying to get a piece together on "underground" or "marginalized" bands in the city. I want to include WREKAGE and Deathgasm, too.
I haven't gotten to listen to it much but I can say since I left, Sam has been doing a good job playing good metal and his co-host (he joined right as I was leaving) picks crappy music so I guess it's hit or miss now. But either way, it's still there. Include it.
also, don't forget Athiest!
They had you do a drug test and the forgot to test for drugs???
