i dont think emo existed in the 80's... but i dont really know anything about emo so i guess i wouldnt know to begin with. After First and Second, which definitely have more metal influence, Baroness just sounds like a great mix of Led Zeppelin-ish rock and stoner metal jams to me, with a harder leaning on their rock influences on the new record.

Nah, it did.

It's just a whole lot different than what is called emo today.

www.fourfa.com explains it better than I ever could.

the main one everyone always talks about is Rites of Spring.

I don't really hear how Baroness sounds like that stuff though.

Rites of Spring was an incredible fucking band. And they didn't manufacture an "emotive state" in order to get in "character" for their shows.

You have Neurosis. And they are responsible for all this second, third, fourth rate chaff: Isis, Pelican, Torche. Then you've got bands like Mastodon and Baroness who've conflated emotionally charged 80s pop-rock with prog (Mastodon) or Neurosis (Baroness) to yield a big boring mess.

Package it up reel purty and everyone's talking about how they are the "next big thing."

not really getting the whole "manufacturing an emotive state" thing from them... i just like the music, regardless of it's influences or its "next big thing" status. Though i will say if they go even further in a "rock" direction on their next record (*cough* mastodon *cough*) i definitely won't like it/them as much... First is still my favorite by far.

Got confirmation on both!

was hoping the PxDx one would be with Scott Hull but instead it's their electronics guy Blake. He plays for fucking HATEBEAK (best parrot metal band ever.)

don't know if you guys listen to any electronica music but the band ghostland observatory is playing the same night upstairs in heaven. I would absolutely recommend checking them out for a song or two if you dig any of that stuff. I'll probably go see a few minutes of their show. They put on an awesome set with fuck-tons of lasers and alot of energy.
We're here to make everything metal... blacker than the blackest black times infinity
