probably one of the main reasons i went from hating metal to being the social outcast i am today. i only saw him once, with sabbath in 92 (atlanta civic center i think), and damn that guy had some pipes. "computer god" still gives me the shivers. he will be missed.

Yep, I was in the same boat. Got a text message just before midnight on Saturday from Tim Hurd that RJD had died, did some checking, found a site that was also reporting it (and from similar "close to the family" sources), posted the sad news on I_LOVE_ZUCKERPENIS and the ProgPower USA Forum. Still no absolute confirmation by 02:30, then Wendy sent a correction to Blabbermouth at 02:36, so I got busy back-editing my earlier posts (and some kind soul deleted the thread on the PP Forum).

Then I got another page from Tim at around 2pm on Sunday down at the RenFaire, confirming the news that he'd passed at 7:45am. Kinda ruined the day for me and several others down there, too.

On a political humor blog I read regularly, there was this unexpected but pleasant eulogy about RJD.

Ripley at Whiskey Fire wrote: Consider this a eulogy, if you will. A poorly written and more angry than necessary kind of eulogy, maybe, but still...

Most of you have probably heard that Ronnie James Dio died yesterday due to stomach cancer. 67 years old, who knew? But what a life! Like his music or not, the dude could fucking sing. But he was bigger than his voice or his career - so much bigger it brings tears to my eyes.

I was a young, naive rock star wannabe in the mid-late 80's. Long on dreams, full of bullshit for the most part, trying to figure things out, thinking that if I had the right bunch of guys in the band we could make something happen and be rock gods. Drinking beer and playing with the girls, sticking it to The Man with our long hair and ripped jeans... you remember those days, right?

Ronnie was... fuck, Ronnie was God to me. His voice, his lyrics, his command of the stage... I was a good foot taller than he was, but he was the biggest sonofabitch I'd ever come across. I got a chance to meet him and he blew my fucking mind. Not because I was meeting one of my idols, but because he looked at me and he cared. A dumb 20-something kid from Nowheresville, Michigan, and Ronnie James Dio said, "You're OK. Let's talk." And we did.

Ronnie and I wrote and called each other for a few years; talking about the music scene, his career, my "career", politics, culture, what have you. He was one of the smartest bastards you could imagine. And kind and generous and caring and just a damned good person, all the way around. He didn't care if his music was popular or not, but he was over the fucking top about giving his fans a good show. "If you can't give them a good show, why are you asking them to pay for a ticket? Do you want to sell posters or play rock n roll? Get out there and play it like you mean it!"

I was one of the very fortunate ones he knew by name. But he was absolutely righteous about every blurry face in the crowd, every raised fist in the cheap seats, every poor kid who spent his last fucking dime to buy one of Ronnie's albums - he loved us all and knew exactly how lucky he was to have people enjoy his music and give up their hard earned dollars to support his career. It was in his bones and in his soul, and he never took it for granted.

And it sucks that he's dead. It fucking sucks.

Ronnie James Dio, John Bonham, Michael Hutchence, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Randy Rhoads, John Entwhistle, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Steve Clark, Tommy Bolin, Marc Bolan, Cliff Burton, Eric Carr, Ricky Wilson, Sid Vicious, Jeff Porcaro, Jerry Garcia, John fucking Lennon... My Dad, some of your parents and family and friends, good people who did good things with no recognition whatsoever... The god damned list goes on and on and fucking on...

And here's "Stargazer" live, because you can never ever hear this song enough:

well, he did sing in Black Sabbath at one point and Black Sabbath is pretty much common knowledge for the most part I guess.

even some folks at my job know who he is or they have at least heard of him. 8)

@Holiday Rambler - that chart is awesome!

Yesterday at Spewtilator practice we were playing Holy Diver. At first it was regular Dio style, then some how eventually it went thrashy dbeat and blast beats.

Fucking ugh. The Westboro Baptist short bus may very well be showing up at the Dio funeral. Yes, the "God hates fags" cretins.

In (brief) response, from the official site:
Wendy Dio wrote:"Ronnie hates prejudice and violence! We need to turn the other cheek on these people that only know how to hate someone they didn't know. We only know how to love someone we know!"
I don't know if I should hope for a) a Westboro no-show, b) a comprehensive disregard for them by the metalheads, or c) war.

What the fuck? That church is fucked. It seems as though we need some black metalers to burn down at least one more church.

Apparently you're not the only one with the idea. There's a FB group for it.
