I swear I can't decide between Darkthrone and Opeth. They do such completely different things for me. Their music reminds me of a (very paraphrased) Jake Johannsen line about Liberace: "He maxed out his Liberace-ossitude; no one will ever say of a performer, 'he's like Liberace, but more so.'" There will not be a Darkthronier Darkthrone, nor an Opethier Opeth.
Outside of metal: Current 93, because I like things I will never, ever understand.

And, from Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent,

I've always loved that song.
After Refused disbanded, Denis Lyxzen left hardcore and went for a more pop/punk approach, which is great in a totally different way.

I can't see what the T(I)NC clip was that you posted on these steam powered computers that we have at work, but I'll guess it was Smash It Up. I am compelled to say that their sound wasn't pop, but a brilliant mixture of soul (primarily of the Northern Soul bent) mixed with punk rock.
My morning drive from an interview to my current job was filled with the Armed Love album. I'm ready to kick over statues, kill the man and raise the revolution!
*** I was wrong, Reproduction of Death is great song, too. That whole Survival Sickness song is the shit.

stewvee wrote:Which era Sabbath? I like Dio more than Ozzy and have a soft spot for the Ian Gillian blight too (BORN AGAIN totally killz).
You are spot on Stew and agree but one of my first album purchases was "We Sold Our Souls...". Also Sabbath has such an extensive catalog, you can't go wrong with choices! I could easily switch to Priest, AC/DC or Rush but Sabbath nudges just a bit more! The first five or six releases by any of these save Caress and Sin, which I still like, still weigh heavy upon my ears.

Heaven & Hell is my fave Dio Sabbath rec too, followed closely by Mob Rules. These two records are deeply imbedded in my high school wake n bake ritual and during/after school fried daydreams. Vinny Appice replacing Ward on Mob is the shit. Three words: Gong bass drum.V-GER wrote:Dio era isn't my favorite but if I had to pick a "the" favorite record, it would be "Heaven & Hell".Brian wrote:I honestly don't understand how people can like Dio Sabbath more than Ozzy Sabbath. There's a lot about Ozzy Sabbath that I love for sure, especially the s/t and Sabotage. But I didn't take to it like the Dio stuff. Dio's voice is so much more goddamn D&D, tankard of ale, Dragonslayer, Heavy Metal Magazine, naked Tanya Roberts on a mink throw in front of smoldering fire.

Agreed. I think the deal probably is that Dio was in the band when a lot of those folks started listening to Sabbath. I didn't discovery Sabbath until the Born Again era, but I heard the Ozzy albums first.Brian wrote:I honestly don't understand how people can like Dio Sabbath more than Ozzy Sabbath.
