metal mags
So as not to trespass in the hall of kings...one of my clearest early picture windows into the ways of metal was mentioned multiple times in that thread, so I have toss this out here real quick. After the untimely demise our beloved Metal Maniacs, I stumbled upon Zero Tolerance. It's not in the same pulpy phone book-esque vein of awesomness that Metal Manics was, but a pretty rad substitute in my opinion (I realize that those of you who care about printed media probably already know about it). Heavy paper, glossy prints and more than tolerable content. The only downside is that us right bloody Yanks are forced to shell out £68 for a year's subscription. I have occasionally come across single issues in various stateside Barnes and Noble, though. This segues nicely into dirty stories I've heard floating around pertaining to a possible hard copy of LHP. Mr. Vee?

I got a sub to Zero Tolerance while my judgement was clouded during mourning the death of Metal Maniacs. The mag does look fantastic, but what is that font size, 2? I get a headache from just scanning that articles, so I had to let that sub lapse.
While mourning Metal Maniacs (the internet only version just doesn't compare) I subscribed to a bunch of metal mags in hopes of finding something comparable. Nothing is. That mag ruled. I still miss it.
Among the mags I tried, here's the breakdown:
Revolver - I gave it a shot, but I cancelled the subscription after, like, two issues for covering nothing I'm interested in and everything that I'm not.
Zero Tolerance - As I mentioned above it went by the wayside because they use a font size designed for chipmunks and my old eyes can't read that shit. Shame, because it's really dense and seemed to have some good stuff buried in it.
SOD (which is now DOA) - I'd flipped through this for years in Tower and such spots because the covers are so pretty, but the guy who does is it seems to be a total basket case with no writing ability whatsoever. I have no idea how he's kept this thing going for so long. I always get fooled by it. I'll be like, "Man, why don't I get this trve kult piece of underground literature" and then I pick one up and I'm all, "oh yeah, because it's sucktastic and without any content." What's the story on this guy, anyone know?
The ones that made the final cut are:
Decibel - Cheap monthly metal, the writing is pretty good, but it's pretty 101 compared to MM.
Terrorizer - Expe$$$ive as fuck UK metal mag that is trve, kult and rulezzz. I'm happy as hell every month when this shows up in my PO Box. Worth every penny - and the sub is about $100/year, give or take.
Hails and Horns - a metal/harcore mag. I went for it because the sub was less than $2. The only problems are that the font is small in some articles and often is not set right and has that "blurry" effect not uncommon to cheapo glossies and newsprint. It's very advertising heavy and seems like it might have started as a freebie from Hot Topic or something. It does seem to be getting better, but I don't read much of it because of the typeset problems and sheer amount of crap that doesn't appeal to me.
As for zines, I pick up Snakepit, Thrash Attack, Levil Uniform and some others I can't think of right now.
Anyone remember a local freebie metal mag that came out in the 90s? I don't recall the name, but it was pretty long, I think. It was very dense and pretty much a one man only project, though I know he did have a chick helping him for a while who I had known years before. Newsprint and packed full of reviews. Just want to remember the name and I wonder whatever became of it. It was a freebie, so it shouldn't have been as threatened by the internet as paid versions.

Yup, we're going print. Right now this is what is on the table:Knucklehead wrote:They've posted a tiny amount of inforrmation on the website. Quarterly magazine. 65 to 100 pages. Color covers (maybe) and b&w interior, possibly on newsprint ala MR&R.
Preserves same features of LHP: Reviews, Interviews, One From the Grave (re-examination of an older or unsung record)... and adds some new ones: cartoons, comix, 10 Seconds 2 Love (examination of single song), column(s), etc etc.
Aesthetically this is gonna be like CRACKED done by the METAL FORCES crew... or vice/versa. It's not going to look like anything else out there and it sure as shit won't read like it.
Interview subjects and other content are state secrets until publication.
We've added a few new writers to the stable for the website. Todd and I likely won't be writing that much for strictly web, but we aim to have it updated frequently as possible. (I plan to continue the "Atlanta is Burning" feature; a new installment is almost finished.) Don't expect some insane turnaround on copy like Metal Sucks or Invisible Oranges. But there will likely be more than one post a week.
OK, I think that's it. I'll keep y'all up to date as far as the debut goes, how you can get it, etc. Thanks for the interest.

You mean Atlanta's own Jim Raggi's Lamentations of the Flame Princess? I think it went into more of a digest form after a while, and maybe had an online surrogate. And Mr Raggi moved to Finland.badcarburetor wrote: Anyone remember a local freebie metal mag that came out in the 90s? I don't recall the name, but it was pretty long, I think. Having googled it, I've found that it appears to be a role playing game now. What?

And, you can probably put me on the subscription list.

Put me down too because the LHP website locks up my work computer on the regular.Knucklehead wrote:It is pretty adventurous to go print in this climate. I loved Circus from the early to mid-80s mainly cuz it was all about the LA scene and Neil Zlozower is a fucking insane photographer. The writing was shit, but that's why there was Creem.
Even after those guys Meltzer and Bangs left the nest, Christgau always managed to fill the stable with some sharp nibs and the guest contributors -- Bukowski doing a Stones show report? You fucking kidding? -- were the shit. The "Dauphin" is still the jam and his Wendy O piece is the reason I started writing about writing about music. No typo.

Terrorizer is definitely cream of the crop, but it sure is fucking expensive. Those attached CDs sure were nice, too. But having never got a sub, and the few copies I picked up at B&N had the CDs snatched from them most of the time...turned out to be a rip-off.

LotFP is rule. And yeah, it's a RPG too.DeathfareDevil wrote:You mean Atlanta's own Jim Raggi's Lamentations of the Flame Princess? Yep, that's the one. Not too surprised about the RPG twist. There was somthing about the tone of that magazine that gave off the nerd vibe. Looks like dude has continued on with the metal angle of LotFP, but it's not been updated in a couple years.
