Where do you find new music?

Post by badcarburetor » Sun June 5th, 2011, 7:43 pm

Based on DeathfareDevil's posts about being in a rut and looking for new stuff I thought we could share some resources.

Obviously, this board is a big source for me with metal.

I subscribe to Decibel and Terrorizer. Terrorizer's mini-profiles in the Choice Cuts section is always a good place to find brand spanking new stuff.

I hit the Nuclear War Now! and Hell's Headbangers pages regularly to see what they are dropping.

I'm on a couple closed forums for music fanatics that lean towards hardcore, oi , rac, Britpop (does that terms still count?) and a bit of everything else under the sun.

I listen to some local radio shows and also the metal channel on satellite radio with special attention to Ian Christie's Bloody Roots show.

Creative Loafing is ok for local shit and Stomp and Stammer is good for it's in depth articles, but just too snarky, politically conservative and elitist overall. It still amuses the shit outta me for just those reasons.

I feel like I stay *pretty* up to date on metal, but could use more input on other genres that aren't just flash in the pans like New Musical Express tends to promote.

So list off where you find out about music whether it's zines, blogs, websites, regular magazines, TV shows, whatever...If it's a good site and not only metal, put it up.

I use Google Reader to keep track of blog subscriptions. Skim through those and stop on what looks cool. Bridge 9 Board and NWN board. Last.fm is pretty helpful.

Jeez I used to keep up with what's new. For me, it's pretty much this forum for the most part and just going out to shows even if I haven't heard the band before.

I used to read metal maniacs when it was still being printed and I used to subscribe to Revolver (it was cheap and it had good stuff sometimes!). Also, it helped that when I was an undergrad, I hosted GSU's metal show so I was always listenin' to new shit (alot of the time, it was shit too LOL) When I first got into death/ black metal, I found metalstorm.net & Internet radio stations to be really helpful too!

Lately I've been pretty tired of finding new music so I just let it come to me.I am subscribed to a bunch of blogs in Google Reader, some of which post way too much (CVLT Nation I'm looking you dead-on). And I'm subscribed to Decibel but they pretty much cover everything I've already heard/heard of. Here's my list..

1. Angry Metal Guy (He has a really shitty taste in music, I should probably unsub)
2. crustcake
3. Full Metal Attorney (Don't know why I'm subscribed either)
4. Impure Lard
5. Invisible Oranges (Unfortunately cosmo is going to be leaving after this summer)
6. Metal Flows In My Veins
7. Metal Review Latest Reviews
8. Musical Warfare
9. Spinal Tapdance
10. Sunyata - Mindful of Metal
11. Teufel's Tomb
12. That's how kids die (really good site)
13. The Left Hand Path
14. Aversion Online
15. CVLT Nation (Pretty much mirrors exactly my music tastes but way too many posts)
16. DDOMANTIA (Too many posts so I usually skim them and they wank over every album but still a good resource)
17. Frozen Rapture
18. Hellbound
19. Loadown (Just downloads)
20. Meatmeadmetal
21. Relapse Records Podcast

Then I browse From Dust Returned fairly often too because they have good reviews. Besides that I check out profound lore's site and some random distros every so often and that's about it. But then there's I_LOVE_ZUCKERPENIS, I "like" all the labels so their hyped bands and stuff show up in my news feed

That and SMN's forum... though some people there really need to get a grip on their post signatures :P

Cerebral Metalhead: http://www.cerebralmetalhead.com/
Just a few blogs I read frequently.

Atilla the Hun - Lots of posts, most is uninteresting
Cosmic Hearse - A lot of cool, varied stuff. Run by one of the dudes from Agalloch.
Dunkelheit - Lots of quantity, quality lacking. Some gems though.
Illogical Contraption - I like this blog a lot.
Midnight Mass - Download just about every post from this blog.
Worship Humanicide - Very hit or miss. Streaky. It'll go for weeks without something cool and then every post for five days in a row is awesome.

I really annoys me that this guy aparently feels compelled to let the entire world know that he is a lawyer. BFD.

Anyway, I'm kinda surprised that no one has mentioned Fenriz' Band of the Week.

Pandora radio is always good. You won't hear stuff like Miasmal, but I've discovered some new bands by listening to it. I miss satellite radio. DirecTV used to have Sirius/XM as their music channels, but they dropped them for some shit called SonicTap. I really miss Liquid Metal channel.

Speaking of 88.5 does anyone know of an online stream. There was a pirate stream when I used to work there, but it got discovered and taken down. I hope there's a new one. My radios won't pick it up for some reason.

I forgot all about the BotW. That's great, too. Fenriz put together a site for it recently so you don't have to scroll through the crappy myspace blogs. http://bandoftheweek.net/

As far as WRAS streaming goes, I remember finding a stream one time, but can't right now. Don't have speakers on this computer. It was something like taking the link for the sports game they were broadcasting online and just plugging it into my media player...apparently it streamed everything that was broadcast, just not publicized. I'll see if I can find it later.

I'm glad I can listen to Wrekage on demand. It would still be nice to not have to go to the car to listen to WRAS. BTW, they need to change the name of that metal show.

Thanks for the link -- I didn't know about the new site.

And, I see that Miasmal is in Fenriz' Hall of Fame. (They should pay me for promotion.)

Recommendations from people whose taste I trust, mostly (be it people I know or rec lists from Fenriz). Also new releases from labels I follow.

Last.fm and RateYourMusic are extremely helpful too.
