Acoustic guitars

Post by badcarburetor » Mon June 27th, 2011, 4:10 pm

I'm usually not a big fan of acoustics, but I do go through phases of wanting a decent one. I just can't ever find one that really meets all my needs. And my needs are pretty simple; basically, it should just play exactly like an electric (and preferably like a Jackson):

The strings shouldn't feel "tight" and be hard to bend.

The action should be able to be set super - and I do mean - super low.

The neck shouldn't be fat. It's shouldn't be wide or deep. It should feel just like the neck on a Jackson. Preferably be sanded down and smooth.

The body shouldn't be too large. I hate those stupid jumbo body guitars. Preferably the body should be slightly smaller than standard.

No stupid built in tuner. Those things are just tacky.

It's gotta have that beautiful, clear acoustic tone that makes it worth hassling with in the first place. Otherwise I'd just play my electrics unamped like I always have.

Oh, and it should be black. I could go for something else, but I'd really prefer not to.

I've nearly given up on finding this elusive dream instrument. A few years ago I picked up an Alvarez "second" from Miller's shithouse. I should have known better, but the price was right and my luthier is a genius so I had no reservations about him making this into my dream guitar. Well, it turns out that he is a genius, but not Jesus, the miracle worker. The action just won't stay down and it buzzes like fuck above about the 9th fret.

The inspiration for this thread was that I was looking through my current favorite website, Look at this Fucking Oogle run by our own gripe, and saw some nerd playing a BC Rich Eagle acoustic. It's orange and kinda funny looking, but I wonder if it plays like an electric. Anyone ever play one those or even know of an acoustic that plays like an electic?

pfft. Grampa's guitars.

:D

You should actually check out the Ibanez Artwood series. I've been really happy with mine. I'm not a huge fan of Ibby electrics, but I bought this one about 8 years ago and I liked it better than a lot of the guitars I tried that cost twice as much. The neck on mine is very similar to an electric. Action is low, but I get very little buzz (as long as my playing is tight). And it sounds great. I'll try to remember to bring it up to the jam space some time so you can noodle around on it a bit.

That'd be great. Thanks! We'll be there next Wednesday.

The only Ibanez that I ever owned was some fancy-schamcy Roadstar II that was all sunburst and gold hardware. Completely tacky unless, I suppose, you are in Kenny G's backing band. I had it when I was about 14 and I've never liked Ibanezes (sp?) since. I'd be willing to check out their acoustics for shits and giggles, though.
