I went to the pre-show and caught only Deathhammer's set. The Old Blue Last was one of the single most cramped shows I've ever experienced in my life. The band was insane even if the singer acts like some weirdo petulant 13 year-old. The crowd was completely going off. Amazing start to the weekend. I only wish I could have stayed for Nekromantheon. We had to bolt early because London travel is dependent on public transportation or very expensive cab rides.
Saturday, I had to work the sets I most wanted to see around Camden shopping and the QPR v Chelsea match watched in a local pub that made me miss Ravens Creed. I walked in right as Witchgrave ended. Literally, like the last note played. Sucked ass. I really wanted to catch them. In Solitude were amazing. Seeing them in this venue made up for missing their recent set here. Pagan Altar finished up the night and were OK. Not really my bag. Their set reminded me of a scaled down version of the finale show by Strange Fruit in Still Crazy; this must have been the best reaction these dudes have had in...ever. They wore purple robes for a few minutes and then discarded them for odd suits and business shirts. It was kind of uncomfortable to watch, but they sounded OK. We popped over to the after show at Blackheart Pub for a quick drink and to watch Scandanavians headbang to Motorhead songs. Man, can those Scandanavians headbang. It's a totally different methodology than here.
Sunday was Morbus Chron who reminded me of what Mayhem was probably like in the early days. Just deathly sickness that was really powerful and engaging and must more intense than recorded. Bunker 66 were kinda dull. Oddly, my husband kind of dug them and he's not really into this kind of metal. A quick fish and chips and we were back for Antichrist who were the suprise highlight of the weekend for me. Those dude just slayed and reminded me of when thrash was new and scary. Elixir were along the lines of Pagan Altar and weren't particularly memorable. Their brand of third tier NWOBHM hasn't aged all that well for me. Aura Noir were unbelievable. Just heavy as fuck and super tight. Far and away the most intense set of the weekend.
I'm not really into festivals, but this one was run really well and there were plenty of other distractions to prevent just standing around for hours on end.
