My response to an editorial in GT's paper about metal
http://nique.net/opinions/2011/11/10/ed ... incorrect/
for reference, the article I was responding to:

Thoughts? Am I right in speaking for everyone or do I make any gross generalizations that don't sit well with you?

Re: Kessler's argument: I don't understand the need to "validate" Heavy Metal by continually pointing out that it shares likenesses with other genre, incl classical music or making gross generalizations like HM = fast guitars.
Re: Kessler/BlackRoija: This is an age old situation of point/counterpoint that's obviously immortal. 100 yrs from now, someone will posit the same argument and receive a similar response from someone who knows what they are talking about.
NOT TO MENTION, that this sorta "give Metal a chance" mantra is laughable. NPR, NYT, NYer... all now cover Metal in some shape or form. If anything, there are TOO MANY PEOPLE GIVING METAL a chance which actually waters down the artform itself, spawns shit music, shit scenes, and annoying letters to the ed (like Kessler's).

ya I mentioned that in my response (with those exact examples, and with your Village Voice article in mind haha) but they cut it in publishing for some reason...stewvee wrote:NOT TO MENTION, that this sorta "give Metal a chance" mantra is laughable. because of mine? all I'm saying I think is that metal isn't necessarily "about" anything, or at least it's not about what the other guy claims it is. anyone who gets butthurt over that is an enigma to metheRothstanator wrote:Someone's gonna be butthurt.
I don't think it's funny at all, since for one reason despite the personnel involved it seems like a portrayal of an outsider looking in, and as such has found an audience in those people. I could read a Wikipedia article and put out basically the same thing. but for the most part I just don't think the jokes are good/exist. but it's not like I'm mad that it's on TV.SlashAndThrash wrote:people need to just get over Metalocalypse, that shit is pretty funny

Reading through it again they actually took a lot of liberties in editing content, mostly for reasons I can't figure out. Makes my writing look even worse than it was to begin with. But whatever.

to be fair, if I were a skateboarder I'd probably be pretty pissed about how this group of 9-year-olds can pretty much do everything Tony Hawk can't and more. and like every sport ever. the show never talks about the drugs I think.SlashAndThrash wrote:it like skateboarders getting pissed at Rocket Power or something.

Exactly. I mean, I never was able to make pitches about Metal records to any print weeklies until a few years ago. Now it's as common as me repping some Wu record or Vampire Weekend.BlackRoija wrote:ya I mentioned that in my response (with those exact examples, and with your Village Voice article in mind haha) but they cut it in publishing for some reason...stewvee wrote:NOT TO MENTION, that this sorta "give Metal a chance" mantra is laughable.
