I had a kick-ass time last night. Loved watching the moshing and stage diving. When Brian plowed his way through the crowd and started the pit all I saw were these two fists heading straight for me! I managed somehow not to get knocked down.
Great turn-out for a Monday night, too. I'd call this one a success. Steal some more big names from the Masquerade, Archive. This night ruled.

Great show, great turnout, sound was good, cool poster for my wall, Obituary was awesome... no leads was a bummer but all things considered, totally ripping. Sadistic was great and Living Decay was just ridiculous.
Glad everything came together for a killer night and kudos to everyone involved for making it happen... I think it's safe to say Obituary was pretty fucking stoked on it. Was great to see a lot of you fine folks there... I saw Amanda for a second in passing but never made it back around to say hey... glad you made it though!!

Ahhh, whatever. Obituary kicked ass. I've seen 'em six times now and this was still a blast. I saw Glen Benton call Ralph a "drunk fucking idiot" from the stage back in July the day after they kicked him out of Deicide, so he's obviously dealing with some issues. Fucking awesome local rep, too. And not one, but two Celtic Frost covers during the night. I haven't had that much fun at a DIY since 585 shut down.

Some general comments, if I may:
1. A HUGE THANK YOU to the gentleman who brought Obituary to Atlanta. I had not seen Obituary since their 'Frozen In Time' tour, so this past Monday night was a real treat. I especially enjoyed Living Decay.
2. I think those people bitching the loudest about the show are being petty and over-critical. Remember the initial tour routing had Obituary skipping Atlanta. So, even though the band was a stripped-down quartet we STILL GOT TO SEE Obituary in a relatively small, intimate venue.
3. I, like several others, really liked them as a four-piece. I honestly did not miss the solos. Obituary, to me at least, has never been about the solos per se, but more about the SLOW GROOVE. While watching/listening I was wondering how many doom bands have been influenced by Obituary.
4. Due to age and hearing loss, I wear earplugs, but I thought the rented PA sounded good. It was not the greatest, but it certainly was not the worst. I've heard worse at the Masquerade: Nile, Hate Eternal, and many others. I made sure to tell the soundman after the show that he did a great job with what he had. Realize the drummer only had one small drum monitor and if I saw correctly there was only one small vocal monitor centerstage, so I think Obituary played a great set and held themselves as seasoned professionals.
5. The drum solo was fine. It broke things up and allowed the rest of the band to have a short break before their encore. What would you have preferred to the drum solo, silence or idiotic shouting the crowd? Actually, I thought it brought a little levity to the proceedings.
6. The band seemed generally psyched to have played and hopefully they remain true to their word and will play Atlanta again next year. Does anyone know what was up with the Masquerade? Trevor seemed pretty pissed about that.
A few things for Archive Gallery:
1. Definitely need to invest in a bigger PA. Hopefully, this will come in time. I would also think about suspending the PA from the ceiling joists. This might help the sound not suffer from crowd interference. I would also invest in some better stage lighting and some overhead fans for circulation. Not everyone that attends is a smoker. Actually, I would prefer the smokers to smoke outside, but I imagine I am in the minority here.
2. I would cut out the stage diving. It's annoying, especially when you can see the band's frustration with such actions. No one running up on stage to dive off seems to think about how they might be messing with the band's timing, but also with pedal setups and such. Call me a joykill, but it was DEFINITELY NOT COOL when one of those cartwheelers not only took out several people sidestage, but ALMOST TOOK OUT THE SOUNDBOARD. Yeah, I don't think many people saw that. If the soundboard would have gone down mid-song that would have been really lame. Several times it looked like the PA stacks were close to tumbling over. Also, who really enjoys getting kicked in the face or head. I don't, but then again, I'm old.
3. From the comments, and this was my first Archive show, I was expecting it to be a toilet. I was pleasantly surprised that was not the case. The staff, or the people that passed for staff, were very friendly which is generally not the case at most clubs.
4. I hope with continued improvements, interest and support that Archive will continue to hold shows.
5. Bottled water for $1: DEFINITE WIN there.
Once again, to Archive Gallery, thank you. I may be forgetting something, but I've rambled too much already.
Lastly, it was nice to meet several forum members in person: Brian (again) and Aaron.
