On the drive home, we had a long talk about Why I Like Metal. She was trying to understand why someone would want to listen to the music, because she says that it makes her anxious and scared. I find that, when talking about music (or maybe any other form of art), it is really easy for the conversation to devolve into bullshit really fast. So all I could really say is, "it speaks to me."sleyja wrote:Haha.MS_39455 wrote:Major props to the missus for not recoiling in horror at such a motley throng of bastards.Knucklehead wrote:We popped in for a minute, but I didn't get to see any of the bands. Meeting the metalheads wasnt originally in the plans for date night.
She then made a few observations about the motley throng of bastards. We've been watching a lot of Rudolf this time around, because the kids are at an age where they get it. Anyway, some of you might remember Hermey, the elf that wants to be the Dentist. The Misfit. She said that she could see how a lot of people at the show were probably sort of misfits. (And that is true: I don't know many people who would get how "Altar of Snackrifice" is such a great fuckin' song title.) Anyway, when I explained that a lot of people at the show prided themselves on being misfits, she observed that shows are probably like the Island of Lost Toys, where everyone sort of fits in.
So chew on that, the next time you guys are moshing it up to Mangled.
And SBG -- I still need to catch a full set. Hopefully sometime soon.

@Knuck - hahahaha yeah I guess she made a good analogy. One of my best friends is the same way; metal scares the livin shit out of her and ofcourse so do the metalheads. (I became friends with her years ago...before I really got into death metal and such) I took her to see Slayer back in 06 or 07 and she just couldn't get it hahaha!
Good answer actually. Might have kept her from thinking, I married a scumbag.Knucklehead wrote: So all I could really say is, "it speaks to me."

I kind of get that because what I consider to be "bad" music like the "soothing sounds of Peach 95" (elevator music) that my mom listened to in the car when I was a kid or doctor's waiting room music on B98.5FM or - Christ forbid - that hideous shit known as Christian Rock makes me edgy as fuck. I get irrated and snappy if I'm stuck listening to that shit for long. In contrast, really aggressive shit like Slayer or whatever calms me down at times and amps me up at others. I guess it's just a personal chemistry thing.Knucklehead wrote: She was trying to understand why someone would want to listen to the music, because she says that it makes her anxious and scared.
I don't know about that whole misfits theory. Since it only applies to the "scene" and not the sound. Maybe in high school or something that applies, but if a person stays into aggressive music for decades, it's certainly something more than that, like, ya know, the shit just sounds good.

there are so many of you who have listened to metal for decades...and in some cases a decade or two before I was even born! As for me, it's been almost a decade and I don't see this changing! (aside from growing up to Black Sabbath and Priest lol)

I've never had this conversation with my wife. She doesn't seem to get scared or anxious when metal is played in our house; she just doesn't really like it. My first year living in the Netherlands with her in 1996 she took me to the Dynamo festival--both Slayer and Venom headlined. She sat through three days of metal surrounded by "misfits" for me, so I gotta give her props for that. Of course that's been the last metal show she's been to. Don't expect her to show up at any local shows anytime soon even on "date night."Knucklehead wrote:On the drive home, we had a long talk about Why I Like Metal. Knuck, I like how you were at least prepared and brought some extra earplugs along for your wife! But it was a good thing she didn't go inside. The extremely large mosh pit would have put her off, I think.
Same here. He thinks it all sounds like dying cats in a trash can, but it doesn't upset him.Moloc wrote:I've never had this conversation with my wife. She doesn't seem to get scared or anxious when metal is played in our house; she just doesn't really like it.
Ditto to badcarburetor on B98.5 making me completely homicidal. Want to watch me fuck shit up and start tossing tables around? Faith Hill. Want to watch me enjoy a leisurely, calm drive home from work in bumper-to-bumper traffic? Sargeist. I'm gonna go with body chemistry.

My man can go about as far as the original thrash bands and then he's out. He doesn't get why I dig shit that sounds like a leaf blower in a blender. He doesn't really mind anything I play, though on occasion he'll ask me to play some "real music." At that point we can compromise on old school metal (thrash, NWOBHM, hair, regular old metal metal) punk, weirdo shit like the Brian Jonestown Massacre, outlaw country, soul, reggae, etc...Fortunately, he's cool with going to the occasional metal show; that people watching can't be beat.
