I've been drinking fancy beer lately... mostly to the tune of Old Chub... such a tasty beer and high alcohol content is always a win. Tried some Red Brick Brown Ale the other day which was decent but probably not something I'd buy again for the price. I got a sixer of Dogfish Head last night but didn't drink any of it yet... I forget which kind... it's 8% abv.

Since my consumption of alcohol is generally relegated to the weekends these days I've decided I can afford to spend a little more on beer... but admittedly I'm not well versed in "fancy beer" so if anyone has some suggestions I'm all ears. I like dark beers (the darker the better) and despise IPAs or anything that is super hoppy since I get heartburn like a motherfucker. High alcohol content is a plus but not a requirement... I also like Newcastle a lot so something in that vein would be cool too. I'd like to stay under $10 a six pack. Beeeeeeeeer

Newcastle is one of my favorites also. I never met an Amber i didn't like.

If you've got twenty dollars to spend and a decent liquor store around, I highly recommend you try a few Belgian Trappist ales.

This, in my humble opinion, is the greatest goddamn beer in existence, and it's around $5.50 for a bottle at the Tower down the road from me.

It's a Belgian pale ale, but in no way does it resemble the IPAs you've probably had before. I probably drink more of it than anything else, as it's relatively cheap compared to most Belgians.

Thank you gentlemen. I've eyed that Maudite before but never pulled the trigger, I'll have to change that. I had no idea Duvel was 8.5% definitely a tasty beer which I have not had in a long time. That Trappistes Rochefort 10 looks incredible...

I hated Old Chub...took me forever to down the 4-pack. I either don't like scotch ales or just don't like that beer.

Lol Dogfish Head has like 100 beers so that narrows it down. Maybe the Raison D'Etre? I've never had that one but I don't like raisins so I'm not sure if I'd like that.

As for recommendations:

I'd stick to Brown Ales, Porters, Stouts, Quads, Belgian Strong Dark Ales if you like dark beers.

Sweetwater Festive Ale (if you can find it)

And if you want to go all out and spend $7 on 1 22oz bottle, Southern Tier Choklat. Tastes like they poured Hershey's syrup in the beer. So good.

Also, just check out Beeradvocate and ask what they would recommend. You can learn a lot just by skimming the forums and the site in general (the forums are down right now though).

I mixed the Founders Breakfast Stout and the Wake n Bake but it wasn't as good as I though. I've heard the Moo-Hoo was good too but I haven't tried that yet.

Thanks for all the recs, it was the Raison D'Etre! I enjoyed it quite a bit... didn't taste overtly "raisiny" to me but I don't mind raisins so it might be more offensive to your taste buds if they ain't your thing.

I can't back that Young's Double Chocolate Stout enough.

Sweetwater now makes Sweet Georgia Brown. If I remember correctly it was originally a Marthasville recipe, but when that brewery shut down, Sweetwater bought(?) the recipe? Soo good. I haven't had that recently enough.

Bud Lite Platinum is pretty awesome. Light, tasty, cheap(ish). And it seems to really stay cold. I know that's an odd thing to say, but it does.

If you hate shitty American beer (I love it), you probably won't dig this too much. But it does have a stronger flavor and is 6%, so it's got that going for it, which is nice...

No problem. I've only been into beer for about a year but I've learned a lot, tried over 120 different beers, and am learning to homebrew and it's becoming a huge hobby for me so if you need any more recs, just let me know.
