Bands like Mogwai and Arab Strap started it in scotland and soon followed by Explosions In The Sky, Mono, and GodSpeedYouBlackEmperor. They are all no vocals, kinda mellow but doomy, melancholic. Really awesome bands and kick ass live shows.
Mogwai are the single loudest show I've EVER been too (louder than Withered!!) and are my favorite band thats not "metal" however there are some pretty heavy parts in thier early albums. I suggest listening to "Ten Rapid", "Young Team", and "Come on Die Young (CODY) which are their best albums.
Mono are from Japan and their new album is great too.
check them out, hope you like!!!
Mogwai is the loudest band I've ever seen as well.

I could never get into Explosions in the sky.
Khanate and Wolf's Eyes are coming here. If i haven't put it on the calendar I will.

I love all Constellation records bands ie, Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion. I don't think anyone mentioned Fly Pan Am. They're awesome.

\m/ GYBE!

I kinda found them on accident freshman year searching for Emperor songs, someone had mis-named GYBE! as Emperor and I thought there was some whole other experimental Emperor album I was unaware of.
