Basically, this.Ryan wrote:YES^
I will say, personally, that the way the vocals 'sound' as a part of the greater whole of the music is the most important thing to me. If the lyrics are actually good that's just a bonus. Hell, plenty of grindcore bands have no lyrics whatsoever and the vocals just serve as another instrument, so to speak. As long as that shit sounds rad it's fine by me, they could be talking about their love for hotdogs for all I care.

Hmm. I don't agree with this at all. Lyrics can be a main draw for me. Not so much with Metal. Not that I give it a pass, it's just the nature of the beast, anything goes in most cases. Like Ryan said, good lyrics are a plus. Outside of metal, lyrics are very important to me. I appreciate smart, well written lyrics every bit as much as well written music. One can cancel out the other. If lyrics are just okay and the music is great, I can dig it. Terrible lyrics - I can't get past it. Bad music won't make me cringe, but bad lyrics will.GameFreac wrote:Same...I don't really care about lyrics. Either the music is good or it isn't.badcarburetor wrote:For me it's a rarity in most genres for the lyrics to be meaningful - or often - even interesting. That would definitely be one of the least weighted factors in my judging a band.
One of the great things about metal is how rarely the lyrics are intelligible.
It's just a bonus if I happen to dig on what someone has to say.

The way I see it- is bad lyrics in good metal is just doing half the work. If you're gonna write a bad ass song, go all the way. I know whats good and bad lyrically is pretty subjective, but I think anyone who wants credit should see that the separate parts of their music are all given the same amount of attention and are somewhat on-par with one another, even if you can't understand the words.

Nah. I ain't got time to spend reading and deciphering lyrics. I listen to way too many hours of music for all that.Knucklehead wrote:But the dude is saying something, and it is probably worth trying to figure out what he is saying, no?
I'm down with the "vocals as instrument" line of thought. Like I said, it's a cool bonus when someone has something interesting to say, but, in my experience, that's far from most - and many just ramble on about dumb, hackneyed shit that others have already said 100x better.
Just my opinion...
