I like the idea that metal doesnt give a fuck about academia or the "scholarly community". Why should I give a fuck that some nerds want to study me playing fast as fuck and turn it into something scholarly.

They should stick to reading Lord Of The Rings and listening to Blind Guardian.

As an academia nerd, I enjoy take sociology classes in...almost anything. If I could have taken some classes in metal, sure, why the fuck not? I pretty much read every book I can about music subcultures anyway, might as well rack some hours for my efforts. However, I don't understand why anyone who spends their lives in a subculture that deliberately goes against the mainstream would ever covet being "legitimized" by society's institutions. Fuck them.

Slightly off-topic, but in my 9th grade history class we were studying ancient Egypt. I told my teacher I had a music video that was filmed at and even inside the great pyramids. She was intrigued and agreed to it. And THAT is the story of how I made my history class watch the video for Seasons in the Abyss.

I don't know what is dumber. The eight string guitar (sitar?) or playing that abomination in gloves. I'm leaning towards the guitar...

Nothing wrong with an 8-string as long as you actually use it and don't just chug-a-lug on the low string the whole time.

I wouldn't get one, but for those who can use 'em, I say more power to 'em.
