Watain booking for fall shows NOW!

My guess is that, with them being an opening act on the Behemoth tour, that Behemoth didn't want to deal with the lasting reek from Watain's shit being on stage before them.

Haha I don't doubt that for a second. Had I been able to go I would have left promptly as they were taking the stage.Brian wrote:Oh, Behemoth brought the reek alright...

i brought the blood to the show in hell. masquerade guys just made me open it and they wanted to smell it. then they let me through. they didn't give a damn about it.Knucklehead wrote:The last show they played was with Behemoth at the Masquerade in Heaven. My understanding is that Behemoth was the one that objected and not so much the Masquerade. I might be wrong about that. I know that last time that Watain head-lined a the Masquerade, the smell lingered for quite awhile, perhaps a couple of weeks.
It is a little weird that so much of the talk about Watain's live shows revolves around the smell. There certainly is a lot more going on: it appeared to me that the last time they played in Hell, it was almost as if they were performing an actual ritual. And E certainly mutters a lot to himself, making me wonder if he is reciting something.
I get that the smell of death is an integral part of their show. And, it did seem to me that their show was less impactful when they played with Behemoth, because the olfactory cues were missing. But it makes me wonder, how much of that is just schtick?

I've seen them there twice: once in 2008 and once in 2010. You saw them with Negative Plane, no? I think that may have been a third show in Hell (?), and I'm pretty sure they played the Drunken Unicorn, once. I remember talking to Tommy about that show.stewvee wrote:i brought the blood to the show in hell. masquerade guys just made me open it and they wanted to smell it. then they let me through. they didn't give a damn about it.Knucklehead wrote:The last show they played was with Behemoth at the Masquerade in Heaven. 5/18/07: Watain, Anglecorpse, Negative Plane, Nachtmystium, and Gravewurm. Best Unicorn show ever.Knucklehead wrote:I've seen them there twice: once in 2008 and once in 2010. This, and:Brian wrote:Most here will probably not agree with me but I'd say very little, if any, is schtick. People like to shit on Watain these days but they are one of the most genuine bands in all of Metal.
It's the complete package. They don't need it, but it sucks when the ritual gets neutered. Watain just brushes it off and keeps going. I'm way more pissed about it than they ever were.GreenMeatShop wrote:I think it all just adds to the overall atmosphere of the show, which was awesome. The Hell show was an overwhelmingly evil experience, from the death smell (which i thought smelled like rotting catfish stinkbait so the tacklebox comment it right), to the incense smell that added to it, to the corpses and bone decorations, to the lighting and billowing smoke, finally the band's performance as a whole. Erik seemed fucking possessed. The show was Behemoth was awesome musically as well, but it was definitely more intense with all the other senses coming into it.

I saw the Angelcorpse/Watain tour twice: in Philadelphia (North Star Bar, if I remember correctly), and Atlanta. Both shows were outstanding, but the Drunken Unicorn performance was an entirely OTHER experience on a completely OTHER level. Have seen Watain numerous times since then, but nothing compares to that night. The performance in Hell with all the props was exceptional, and it was a ritual performance, but the Drunken Unicorn show truly defied description - such magical violence in such a confined space.
Regarding the blood, stench, etc., they are seasoned professionals and used to performing without props and excessive blood. The Armageddon Fest in London several years ago with Von, The Devil's Blood, etc., featured them wearing blood, but no major props, roadkill, fire, etc. And still, they were lethal.
Really looking forward to seeing Watain again. If the lineup holds true it should prove an incredible evening: Watain has 'The Wild Hunt' coming soon, In Solitude is scheduled to release a new LP later this year, and the new Tribulation is one of the best albums, by anyone, in recent memory.
