Bathory -- The Return.... The Venom influence is strongest on this one, I think.

You disagree? I have always heard people complain that Bathory basically ripped Venom off. I don't really hear it on the first or third albums. But some of the guitar riffs on this one sound a lot like Mantas. "Total Destruction", I think, is one of the songs that I had in mind.

The first one I guess (it's still dirty as fuck), but The Return is like nothing I've heard before or after really. I'm a huge Venom fan, but IMO Mantas' riffs, as nasty as they can get, really don't end up sounding like five leaf blowers, as Quorthon's do here. To me this is the tradition Darkthrone's Blaze, Under..., and Transilvanian... grew out of.

The sound of the guitars is totally dirty. But the way some of the those riffs are actually structured, it sounds a little like Mantas around the edges.

You can throw Mayhem and Gorgoroth in there too, I think. It seems pretty clear to me that "Possessed" on this record was the inspiration for Gorgoroth's "Possessed by Satan."

Sorry -- the song that caught my attention was "Born for Burning". That main riff is totally Mantas.

Nope, how is it? I just came across The Mercian Sphere the other day. Usually stuff like that isn't my bag but I've been enjoying it quite a bit.
